Overview

A book all about rocks and minerals, in the expert reader strand.

Much more than a simple spotters' guide! ROCKS AND MINERALS will enthrall young rock enthusiasts with amazing information about how rocks help us understand Earth and our own history, from early fossils to the treasure troves of pirates and the building of spacecraft. Superb artwork shows what is happening out of sight beneath Earth's surface in volcanoes, caves, and mines. Specially photographed galleries show off the beauty of rocks and minerals, and a simple key enables readers to identify any rock.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
The subtitle explains that this book is “packed with hundreds of sparkling photos and a collector’s guide.” It is indeed packed with pictures. Most of the pages are filled with brilliant pictures, long captions, and short sidebars explaining the work of rocks and minerals on our planet. The writing is clear and straightforward. No one will get lost with these explanations. However, they will be distracted by the pretty pictures. One stunning photo shows an erupting volcano, referred to as a “new rock factory” in the caption. The caption goes on to explain how the magma rises from deep within the planet and explodes on the surface. What kid would not like the drama? The first section introduces the overall structure of Earth and provides some definitions. The next section looks at different kinds of rocks as well as their many uses. Green then addresses minerals and finally gems. This book will enhance middle school science classes. In addition to the collector’s guide and identification key in the backmatter, there is the normal glossary and an index. Scholastic also provides a free digital companion book with more information, which could be projected so the entire class can use a book at once. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen AGERANGE: Ages 10 up.
