Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
With breath-taking pictures and dramatic subject matter, this edition to the "Discover More" series talks about extreme weather and offers an online digital companion book with weather prediction projects. Starting with normal weather, the authors discuss the earth science of weather patterns, and how climate effects them. In the next section, they address extreme weather—baseball sized hail, record-breaking tornadoes, and hurricanes—including the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The information is provided with dramatic images, short introductory paragraphs and many short sidebars. While some of the information is depressing, the fast-paced book pulls readers through the disasters and offers side topics that lighten the mood. For example, they wrote up a question and answer interview with a storm chaser, who drives a specially designed vehicle into the storm to measure the wind and make movies for IMAX. In another light note, the authors talk about weird weather—such as raining fish. The book's last section, called "working with weather," describes more of the tools scientists use to measure and predict the weather, even as it changes. Weather is part of the curriculum, and kids will enjoy this up-to-date explanation of the science. Back matter includes a glossary and index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
