Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This addition to the Scholastic Discover More series, which includes access to a digital companion book, looks at the characteristics common to all reptiles before examining snakes, lizards, crocodilians, and turtles. Readers are greeted by a giant closeup photograph of a pink web-footed gecko, which “drinks dew from its eyeballs in the early morning”; later, a “hall of fame” features framed photos of the smallest and “weirdest looking” reptiles (the Jaragua sphaero and thorny devil), among others. The crisp color images, strange-but-true details, emphatic prose, and wide variety of creatures form a vibrant portrait of this class of animals. Simultaneously available: Weather. Ages 7–10. (July)
Children's Literature - Remy Dou
Crawlers, lickers, biters, and swimmers—the variety of reptiles to discover will make any curious child giddy with excitement. From venomous snakes to Komodo dragons, reptiles include some of the planet's most awe-inspiring creatures. Many of them are captured in the pages of this book. The jewel of this volume in the "Discover More" series is the incredible team of artists, designers, and editors who meticulously formulated every layout. Each turn of the page offers a fresh design, replete with colorful photographs. Young readers will learn much about reptiles from studying the detail in the illustrations alone. The narrative does not carry a storyline; instead, Arlon and Gordon-Harris provide a plethora of facts about reptile. However, while these facts may interest the curious, they are not particularly unique or more engaging than those found in similar books. Although the sentence structure takes young readers' abilities into account, the terms may present a challenge for some. Nevertheless, this gripping informational book would make an excellent addition to teachers' libraries, particularly if they have students who love reptiles. Reviewer: Remy Dou
