Overview

A modern reference book about the Titanic in the expert reader strand.

TITANIC encourages children to think for themselves about what caused this great disaster, and how it could have been averted. It presents evidence that allows readers to determine who the heroes and who the villains of the tragedy were. The book introduces all the key players--the owners, the builders, the crew, and the passengers--and tackles the controversies at the center of the drama. Unique, specially commissioned artwork explores the ship, deck by deck. And moving eyewitness accounts from survivors help the reader understand their plight in the countdown to disaster.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Over 100 years after it sank, the Titanic continues to live on in people’s imagination. The glamour of the ship, the beliefs surrounding it, and the fact that it sank on its maiden voyage have only added to the mystery and romance surrounding the sinking. The tragedy sparked changes in regulations for ocean liners and called attention to the differences between classes and treatment of different classes by society. Callery does not offer any new information about the ship or the tragedy, but the images filling the text, many colorized from black and white images, will make this brief text appeal to any fan of Titanic’s history. Beginning with the building of the Titanic and continuing to the discovery of the shipwreck on the floor of the Atlantic, the author presents interesting facts and figures about the ship, interspersed with personal stories from survivors and victims. A digital book is available online, accessible from the Scholastic website, with a code included in the text. The digital book presents five dramatic retellings of survivors stories interspersed with more trivia about the ship. Reviewer: Danielle Williams; Ages 10 to 15.
