Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
This brightly colored, factually accurate, high-energy book will let students browse or look up facts. Each chapter starts with an overview in which information is presented as brief pullout paragraphs. Captions to pictures and infographics integrate writing and drawing. In the chapter about skin, we first see close-ups and anatomical views of our skin and its basic functions. Subsequent pages in the chapter show dramatic pictures of eyelash mites and a head louse. Additional infographics feature hair and nails. The images are intense and phenomenal; for example, the head louse picture takes up an entire page (making it hard not to scratch your head as you read). This book will hold students’ attention. As an overview of the human body, however, it is structured differently than I have seen before. There is little or no focus on “systems” (e.g., respiratory system, muscular system, skeletal system), which is the way many schools approach lessons on the human body. Yes, the book explains breathing, muscles, and skeletons, but the nomenclature does not match up, which may make this book a little more difficult for students to use. On the other hand, students will enjoy paging through to find the right part. The book includes a free eBook download called “Be a Brainiac,” as well as a glossary and an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen; Ages 9 up.
