Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Two hundred and fourteen outstanding American women are profiled in this user-friendly book. The biographies of these dynamic, talented, influential and distinguished women are arranged by date, stretching from the 1500s to the present. Photographs and sketches accompany most of the entries, which are well written and concise. Readers will recognize many names here, particularly prominent women of the last century such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbara Jordan, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Florence Griffith Joyner. However, names such as Victoria Woodhull, a stockbroker who ran for president in 1872, and Sarah Winnemucca, a 19th century Native American activist, may be new to many readers. This book, which is a "Scholastic Reference" title, is a valuable resource with an excellent format. It will inform and entertain young minds and enrich school and classroom libraries. 2002 (orig. 1996), Scholastic Reference/Scholastic, Pettenati
KLIATT
Over 250 brief biographies of famous American women, from Abigail Adams to Venus Williams, are presented here along with photos and illustrations. The arrangement is chronological, divided into six time periods, from The First American Women (1500s-1700s) up through Women Power! (1970s though the 2000s). Overviews of what life was like for women in the various eras preface each section, with mentions of the suffrage movement, women at war, the civil rights movement, and other events that affected women's lives in each time period. Sidebars highlight tidbits of women's history; for example, how women were depicted onscreen in the early years of the film industry. A wide range of women is represented here, from the expected names like Pocahontas, Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, and Hilary Clinton to lesser-known women like Maria Mitchell, an early astronomer, Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii, and Maggie Kuhn, founder of the Gray Panthers. A nice addition to any public or middle school library, good for browsing or quick reference. KLIATT Codes: J—Recommended for junior high school students. 2002 (orig. 1996), Scholastic, 206p. illus. bibliog. index.,
