Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janice DeLong
Filled with more than 700 words and pictures, this is an updated version of a dictionary for the youngest readers, as well as preschoolers who are beginning to give names to objects. Brightly colored illustrations define each word with well-considered use of white space. Beginning with labeled parts of the face and hands on the first pages, the youthful user knows immediately that this book was designed with him/her in mind. Color bands mark divisions between each general topic, and a question that requires observation or evaluative thinking introduces each new section. A book that entertains the inquisitive child while introducing an impressive vocabulary, this is a valuable resource for primary school libraries and classrooms. For home use, this title offers a grand opportunity for parents or grandparents to broaden the horizons of those preschoolers who often ask the question, "What's that?" Chapters include the body, the house, the school, the city, the grocery store, and exploring nature. Those topics seem to more than cover the expanding world of the target audience. Reviewer: Janice DeLong
Publishers Weekly
This updated visual dictionary, first published in 2005, features more than 700 clearly labeled images of inanimate objects, food items and living things. A section called “The Living Room” contains common items including a remote control, telephone and DVD player. Among the animals living “In the Forest” are a slug, owl and stag. Though the items are sometimes inconsistent in their scale (a pink roll of toilet paper is as large as the toilet beside it), the artwork (and assorted reader-directed questions) will engage the curious. Ages 4–8. (June)
