Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lois Rubin Gross
The subtitle of this book is hyperbolically accurate. Every rule you ever learned about grammar (and later forgot) is included in this text. The book is a reminder of exactly how difficult a language English is to learn, to write, to spell, and to use. Young grammarians will find the book comprehensive, including parts of speech, sentences, paragraphs, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and expressive writing. The format is colorful and punctuated with the author's avatar, interjecting exceptions to the rule. Old war horses like, "I" before "e" except after "c," or when it sounds like "a" as in "neighbor" and "weigh," are trotted out only to be proven "exceptionally" wrong. The most fun, of course, is the section of, "Getting your Message Across," which includes metaphors and idioms and—my personal favorite—onomatopoeia. The mini-thesaurus at the back of the book is actually a pretty good tool for students and might even serve well for readers preparing for entrance exams. Examples offered of English usage are frequently, groaningly, humorous or punny, making this a relatively light-hearted book from which to learn. A solid purchase for classroom, library, or personal use. Reviewer: Lois Rubin Gross
