Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
Although it actually would not fit into most reader's pockets, there is a great wealth of information in this new version of Scholastic's pocket resource—a great resource for elementary through high school students. It provides students with 13,000 words and definitions, as well as a wealth of guides to help even the most inexperienced dictionary user feel comfortable looking up new words. The "Dictionary Entries" guide helps new users understand why each dictionary citation looks as it does. This section is followed by the 13,000 definitions, and these are definitely words that students would actually come across in their reading. Separate guides at the end of the book address a variety of language-related topics, including grammar, punctuation, capitalization, common idioms, initials, acronyms and abbreviations. This dictionary is a solid update and should be a helpful addition to any student's backpack. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up—To cram in more than 13,000 definitions in 666 pages, something has to give, and in this case it's visuals: this volume lacks the pictures and maps regularly included in dictionaries for this audience. Compared to the previous edition (2005), the main body of the dictionary is 48 pages longer, and the other sections have changed somewhat. Readers will still benefit from a pronunciation key and an "Initials, Acronyms, and Abbreviations" section, but gone are the "Measurement Tables" and "Facts About the 50 States" sections, replaced with precise guides to grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and idioms. The two-columns-per-page dictionary features entry words in red font with their pronunciations and definitions in black. Guide words are in white font in a red banner. This dictionary will be helpful for those who need definitions and as a quick reference to grammar.—Beth McGuire, Hempfield Area School District, Greensburg, PA

Excellent dictionary but it falls apart easily.  I'm about to buy my third one.  Yes, seems crazy, but it is the best children's dictionary I've ever seen.  It is simple enough for first graders, but will still be useful into middle school.

Much better than the previous pocket dictionaries we have purchased, contains many more words and the definitions are clear. Only setback is it is a bit larger than the other pocket dictionaries.
