Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book has a clear pronunciation guide at the front to help students decipher the phonetic listing in each entry. This dictionary also contains a listing of common abbreviations, acronyms, and initials. In the front of the book, a reference page helps students understand how each dictionary entry is divided into syllable breaks, with a pronunciation guide, part of speech, homophones, related words, word forms, usage guide, and of course, the definition or definitions. Unlike most dictionaries with white pages and black type, this volume has a friendly blue wavy design along the borders of each page. Each page has the section highlighted within a dark blue tab shape. Each separate word entry is in blue, too. The type is quite large for a dictionary and is in a legible, sans serif typeface. The back matter contains a page of basic measurement tables for length, weight, and temperature. The final pages contain a list of facts about the fifty states. This includes each state's postal abbreviation, nickname, population, capital, and year of admission into the union. This book is part of "Scholastic Reference" series, which includes the titles Pocket Thesaurus, Pocket Dictionary, and Pocket World Atlas. 2006, Scholastic, Ages 8 to 12.

    Great for struggling readers

This dictionary is colorful and clearly written and very kid friendly. The print is not too small, it has plenty of age appropriate words and pictures. I would like to purchase a class set!

    Very easy reading

    Pronunciation guide works good.
The syllable breaks are very helpfull.
The words to define in blue color makes it easy to read.
This dictionary is worthy the pric, even if it does not have all the words like in other bigger dictionaries.

    Great Resource

We picked out this dictionary for homework help, and my 7 year-old uses it successfully on her own. Last week, her teacher told me that her spelling had gotten significantly better, and I really credit the use of a dictionary with homework. We looked at many dictionaries and chose this one because the entries and definitions were clear, and it was comprehensive without being overwhelming. Great Purchase. Great Resource!
