Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ann Reddy-Damon
Ultimate Guide to Baseball outlines the game in six chapters, punctuated with sections called "Meet the Teams." It begins with a brief history that includes debunking the Abner Doubleday myth. Buckley moves on to describe details about hitting, pitching, defense and base-running. Each segment is formulaic, starting with a "how to," ending with a greatest player, and including significant statistics for each topic. The team descriptions follow a pattern of basic facts, history, greatest and lowest moments for the team, and an all-time and current star. While a book of statistics might be difficult to read, Buckley embraces his readers through graphics and a familiar tone. His voice is readable, not calling attention to itself until the end of the book when he humbly (as a Boston Red Sox fan) declares the New York Yankees the mightiest team. Even though the segments are short, he ties the book together with his historical perspectives in the brief outlines of the teams. Reviewer: Ann Reddy-Damon

Gr 4–7—This is a wide-ranging, brisk overview of the game. Sections briefly skim baseball history, hitting, pitching, defense and baserunning, and the World Series. Each major league team is introduced in a thumbnail sketch, denoting team highs and lows, number of World Series titles, "funky facts," and rising stars. Other topics include baseball slang and nicknames, the 11 ways to get on base, and the author's choices for the best defensive players of all time, including the legendary Ozzie Smith at shortstop. Buckley writes with a lightly humorous touch that should appeal to fans and browsers. The bare-bones packaging (three-color text and graphics, black-and-white photographs) is minimalist, but won't deter fans from gobbling up this up-to-date resource.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA
