Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Perfect for sports geeks, this edition of the "Scholastic Year in Sports" series combines news, records, and stats through August 2013 with predictions and schedules for 2014. Busy pages offer a patchwork of text, sidebars, statistics, and action photos, each chapter starting with a striking color spread of an event in that field. The NFL gets the most space—covered are each game of the playoffs, the Super Bowl (Ravens and 49ers), records set, awards won, rookie quarterbacks of the season, and a table of Super Bowl winners since 1966. Next comes college football; then on to major league baseball with a summary of the season's surprises, the playoffs, and the 2012 World series (winner: Giants). Fans will enjoy a tribute to Mariano Rivero, rookies to watch, and a chart listing World Series winners since 1933. College Basketball features outstanding women players, while the NBA section is full of great action shots, news of Miami Heat's LeBron James, and stats on champions since 1946-47. Hockey, NASCAR racing, and other motor sports get similar treatment, while a chapter on extreme sports takes readers through the Summer and Winter X Games, which in 2014 will move to Austin, Texas. Soccer fans will find less information; its chapter focuses on World Cup prospects and hails women's champion, Abby Wambach. Golf and tennis sections cover new players like young golfer Guan Tianlang and tennis stars Andy Murray (Wimbledon winner) and the spectacular Serena Williams. Most interesting to casual observers might be the lesser-watched ones: skiing, horseracing, track, lacrosse, cricket, and cycling. Saving the oddest for last, Buckley reports on a Quidditch World Cup, and Indonesian racing cows. Young fans can wind up with a page about outstanding child athletes and a schedule of important events for the 2013-14 season. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
