Because the data that has been collected surrounding the topic of School Finance is relatively new, the concept, despite the fact that it has changed very little since the establishment of the first public school, is very difficult to fully understand. The authors in this text did a great job informing all of the various aspects of creating a school budget. They provided numerous budget possiblities while using the data to support why their specific views and perspectives were correct. The layout of the book makes it easy to find specific areas of school finance like private school financing versus public school financing etc. The authors not only stated the obstacles that schools currently are facing, but they offer real-life possible solutions that can be supported with data and directly implemented. I would recommend this text to any educator who has to deal with this controversial issue of school finance. Even educators who don't deal directly with the budget could benefit from at least knowing how difficult it is to define equity and adequacy across the board. The text offers ideas and suggestions for trying to "standardize" school finance in ways to ensure that ALL students get the adequate funding that is needed in order for them to achieve a high-quality education.
The book could have offered a more hands on approach to enable its readers to attempt to deal with this issue of school finance more realisticly once they were out on their own.
If I was not an educator, or concerned about school budgets, I would not read this book. It is definitely a textbook and not written to be easily understood by people who are not vested in education. But as an educator, the book is very helpful in showing the intricate pieces of what all goes into the making of an equitable school budget.
