Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
At age twelve Randal's future as a squire-in-training to be a knight at Castle Doun changes forever when he meets Madoc the Wayfarer. Madoc is a wizard, and Randal follows him to become a student at the School of Wizardry. The first book in the six-title "Circle of Magic" fantasy series, Wizardry may capture a reader entranced by Harry Potter and looking for more, although the book lacks the intense readability of the Potter books. Nevertheless, the plot develops well as Randal cultivates friendships, rescues a thief, and struggles to master even the simplest spells, such as lighting a candle. His training and abilities are put to the ultimate test when he is betrayed by a master wizard and must overcome a powerful evil in order to move from apprentice to journeyman wizard and also to save his own life and prevent the destruction of the School. 2000, Troll Communications, $3.95.
