Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
There is only one kid who isn't dressed for picture day and it's because she's too busy with her toolbox. But when the camera doesn't work, guess who fixes it? According to PW, this is "a winning snapshot of an unconventional heroine whose curiosity saves the day." Ages 8-up. (July) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-It's picture day, and everyone arrives dressed to the nines. Everyone, that is, except Josephina Caroleena Wattasheena the First, who had "more important things to think about." What she cares about is not pretty bows or jewels and jackets, but, rather, how the gearshift on the bus works, or the electric pencil sharpener, or the sprinkler system at school. Of course, finding out how these items work takes some "highfalutin fidgeting, fiddling, fuddling, and foopling" on her part, which always spells disaster for the other students in the class. As the day goes on, they get progressively dirtier as the girl continues to take things apart. When the photographer arrives and his camera won't work, it's Josephina, of course, who comes to the rescue. The zany, colorful, cartoon illustrations complement the child's eccentric nature, showcasing a multiethnic classroom fully engaged in her antics. While the text can be wordy at times and some pages verge on busy, children will enjoy Josephina's story. It may even relieve some pre-photo jitters.-Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A child's urge to tinker brings her entire class to the brink of disaster-and, happily, back. Everyone starts out to school dressed in their best, but they take on an increasingly spotty look after Josephina Caroleena Wattasheena the First sprays them with oil while disassembling the school bus's gear shift; with pencil shavings when she deconstructs the pencil sharpener; then water as she plumbs the sprinkler system's mysteries; and finally soot from the bowels of the boiler. The rather twee photographer-" ‘Everyone, say cheesy wheezy, if you pleasy' "-has troubles too, as he struggles to get the children together, only to discover that his camera is kaflooie. Sounds like a job for you-know-who. Wickstrom fills his cartoon classroom scenes with gap-toothed, square-mouthed grins, and gives his dark-skinned engineer-in-training both a tool chest and an expression of fierce concentration. Young readers, with or without a mechanical vocation, will laugh at Josephina Caroleena Wattasheena the First's compulsive "fidgeting, fiddling, fuddling, and foodling," as well as the decidedly unusual class portrait that ultimately results. (Picture book. 6-8)

In this happy story, 'School Picture Day', by Lynn Plourde, a girl named Josephina did not know it was school picture day. Josephina broke everything but at the end the camera man broke his camera and Josephina fixed the camera. 'Hustle, Bustle, Hurry, Scurry!' the teacher always said. I would recommend this book to second grade girls and boys because it is really funny and I think you would like to read it!

School Picture Day is about Josephina and the photographer. In school Josephina has a problem....that the photographer was trying to take a picture but Josephina was busy doing stuff on her own. My favorite part was when the author said that the chldren could see the photographers toe bones. I woud recommend this book to people who love to take pitures. This book is really funny. I give it 5 stars!
