Like the Current Controversies, this anthology series offers different perspectives on current issues. Contrasting opinions aren't emphasized; rather, a range of opinions on each subject is offered. This series helps readers out a bit more by summarizing each author's opinion in a brief paragraph at the beginning of each essay. Cloning examines the science of cloning, cloning animals, cloning and the media, cloning and the law, and whether humans should ever be cloned. Authors include reporters, scientists, professors, and lawyers, and there is an overview of the issues in the introduction and a glossary of terms as well as an annotated list of organizations to contact at the end. School Violence looks at the nature of school violence, its causes, personal narratives, and preventing school violence; many of the authors are reporters. The section on personal narratives is especially effective; the book otherwise follows the same format as Cloning. Students will welcome the information here for research papers, while teachers will appreciate the background data for class discussions. Useful for public libraries as well as high school libraries, for anyone interested in these issues. The introduction defines school violence in its historical context and includes current statistics and legislation. Separate sections are devoted to the nature and causes of school violence and means of prevention. Each selection is introduced with a summary paragraph as well as with a biographical blurb about its author. Several pieces were written in reaction to the Columbine shootings. This title will be useful for reports, speeches, debates, and research papers. Younger students may find Francha Roff Menhard's School Violence (Enslow, 2000) or Gus Gedatus's Violence at School (Capstone, 2000) more suited to their needs.
