Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
Book four in the new "STAT" series, named after NBA Superstar Amar'e Stoudemire's nickname. The series is based on his life, and target middle-grade readers. Schooled is the fourth book in this series, and shows how Stoudemire went from being a street tournament basketball player to becoming a team member on a real school team. This story begins when he is only eleven-years-old. He is not only competing as an outsider, but is also trying to gain a place on his Florida school's basketball team, the Bears, against older players. After he is accepted for the team, he has to prove that he really deserves to be there. The first person point of view provides a sense of immediacy to the story. His relationships with his teammates are realistically portrayed, and these dynamics are shown through action and dialogue. Black and white illustrations complement the text. Other books in the series include: Home Court, Double Team, Slam Dunk, and Most Valuable. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
