Meet the Author

Paul Langan

Born in Philadelphia, Paul Langan spent his early childhood in the city before moving with his single mother to southern New Jersey. There he attended public school and worked a variety of jobs—including salesperson at a shoe store, attendant at a horse ranch, landscaper at a mental hospital, and a night-shift stockperson in a warehouse store near Atlantic City. “Each job,” he says today, “could be the topic of several juicy novels.”

In 1991, he enrolled at Camden County College and a year later transferred to La Salle University, where he studied creative writing and literature, earning a B.A. in English. While at La Salle, he lived with international students, traveled to his roommate’s home in Kenya, became a prison tutor, and found “the courage” to write.

After graduation, he worked for a nonprofit agency in Philadelphia and then joined Townsend Press (TP) as an Assistant Editor. After he contributed to a number of TP textbooks and taught English at a community college, Paul reconnected to his interests in creative writing through the Bluford Series. Originally working as an assistant with the Bluford novels, Paul’s role steadily grew. He now serves as both editor of the series and author or coauthor of several novels, including The Bully, The Gun, and The Fallen. His stories reflect his personal experiences, including the difficulties of growing up without a father, being the “new kid” in school, and dealing with the loss of a loved one.

In 2001, Paul completed a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to expanding the Bluford Series, he dreams of writing a successful movie script, preferably a “supernatural thriller.” Today Paul lives with his wife and three children near Philadelphia and stubbornly clings to the hope that he will one day see the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.

The book "Schooled" is about a boy, Lionel Shepard, who has a dream of becoming a NBA star. Friends, family and teachers constantly pressure him. Because he is under a lot of pressure, he will make bad decisions. This book is great for teenagers in junior high and high school. It is definitely a relatable book because it deals with a lot of things that teenagers deal with. I recommend that you read this book.

Lionel Shephard is in deep trouble, he wants to play basketball but his dad wants him to study and get good grades. But the problem is he can hardly read or write, and all he wants to do is play basketball. The Authors purpose of this book is to tell about a student that doesn’t like school and likes basketball. I think he is trying to show a regular teenagers life who don’t like school but like to play a sport.   Schooled is a series called Bluford Series where it tells about real life problems with everyone at Bluford High School. In this book Lionel Shephard is making bad grades and is failing all of his classes, and with his mom away for two years and his dad hardly at home he doesn't know where to turn for help. He decided to move out so he can drop out of school because he doesn’t know how to do any of the work. All he thinks about is basketball.  I think this book achieved its purpose because it was showing a person who doesn’t care about his grades and likes to play a sport. Many students feel the same way as Lionel about school so I think they would be able to relate to this book in a very positive way. This book compares to all of the other Bluford Series in the same way because all of the students have a serious situation that they have to deal with.   I would definitely recommend this book because this book isn't just a regular book it brings the book to life in so many ways. This book is made for a teenager that struggles and tries to find his/her way out of their situation, like in this book Lionel is asked to read a poem to the class and he can’t read the words and he doesn't know how to write but he wants to play basketball and in order for him to do that he needs good grades.

Imagine a High School student who can barely read, his teachers don't know if they should pass him and that means he won't be able to play basketball. Joining the NBA has been Michael's dream ever since he can remember, but his dad thinks basketball is a waste of time and no one believes in him. Michael is lost and has nowhere to turn to. I definitely recommend this book because you will never want to put the book down and it is a light but interesting read!

what would you do if your friend was a high school drop out and he wanted you to be the same but you had big dreams of playing in the NBA and had skills to do it? I like that the book hit home for me and its real life not just what people want to imagine life being like. Some of the chacters in this book are Lionel, which is the main chacter. Lionel is a very good basketball player and wants to join the NBA . I recommend you buying this book if you like basketball and real life situations .
