Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Raymond
When Alden family friend Max declares that nothing exciting ever happens on Port Elizabeth Island, the children take his comment as a challenge, and the family sets out to spend some time there. Upon arriving at the small, extremely isolated island they quickly learn that all is not right. The people of the island, who are generally standoffish with tourists or strangers, are extremely excited for the arrival of The Money Man. So-called because he gave the children ten dollars in exchange for an old quarter, he is returning to trade with the people of the island. The Aldens are immediately suspicious of this Money Man, and set about uncovering his secrets. This is a cute little story with enough mystery to keep the reader wanting to read on and learn more about what is happening on the island. The simple pictures scattered throughout the story help readers to visualize the characters and the events while still leaving room for the imagination. Part of "The Boxcar Children" series. Meet the Author

The Boxcar Children Series was created by Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, when she realized that there were few, if any, books for children that were both easy and fun to read. She drew on her own experiences in writing the mysteries. As a child, she had spent hours watching trains near her home, and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. In each story, she chose a special setting and introduced unpredictable, unusual or eccentric characters, to help highlight the Aldens’ independence and resourcefulness. Miss Warner lived in Putnam, Massachusetts until her death in 1979.
