First opened for the 2000-2001 school year, it is named in honor of Vern Bennett, Fargo Public Schools superintendent from 1971-1999. The school serves kindergarten through fifth grade . The school colors are red and gray and the school mascot is a bear . As of June 2007, the principal was Vicki Stormoe.Bennett enrolled 568 students during the 2005-06 school year, with 34 teachers, yielding a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 to 1. The school employs 20 non-teaching staff. The student body in the 2005-06 school year contained 3 American Indian or Alaskan students, 20 Asian students, 14 black students, 9 Hispanic students and 522 white students. Three hundred and six students were male and 262 were female .Bennett has two librarians on staff and its library had 20,621 books as of May 2007. Extracurricular activities include: German, Spanish, French, the Good News Club, the Homework Room, Afterschool Gym, Marketplace for Kids, Fargo Youth Commission, orchestra, chimes and choir, Parent-Teacher Association , track, TechGyrls, and Empowerment for girls. Annual activities include: Fall Festival, Spring Fling, Bear Fair, Reflections, Math Night, North Dakota Family Night, and Tailgating. After finishing fifth grade at Bennett, students next attend Discovery Middle School .Bennett Elementary was built by the Meinecke-Johnson Company at a cost of $7.5 million.
