This book gives a comprehensive account of Schrödinger's successive interpretations of quantum mechanics, culminating in their final synthesis in the 1950s. Schrödinger's original position in the realism-anti-realism debate is analyzed. His views on the wave-corpuscle issue are contrasted with Bohr's, and his conceptions of the measurement problem are systematically compared with current no-collapse interpretations.

Editorial Reviews

Traces the evolution of Erwin Schr<:o>dinger's successive interpretations of quantum mechanics culminating in his final synthesis in the 1950s. Among the factors described are his apparently conflicting attitudes toward realism and their reconciliation in the framework of S. Blackburn's quasi-realism, his rejection of corpuscles and adoption of wave-like entities because of his phenomenalist conceptions of material bodies and his quasi-realist attitude toward theoretical entities, his views on the measurement problem compared with no-collapse interpretations of today, and the differences between his and Bohr's position. Of interest to historians and philosophers of modern physics, and to scientists who suspect that the field might have taken a wrong turn awhile back and are looking for a sign.
