Overview

No one would say that Ian Bostridge is the greatest tenor out there today. No one could imagine him as Rodolfo or Siegfried. But Bostridge may well be the greatest tenor out there today in the right repertoire. His voice is light but strong, his tone is strong but supple, his technique is supple but powerful, and his interpretations are powerful but sensitive. And given that description, the right repertoire is surely Schubert. As Bostridge amply demonstrates on this 1998 Schubert recital, he may be the best Lieder tenor out there today. His "Ganymed (D. 544)" is transfiguring, his "Im Frhling (D. 882)" is inspiring, his "An den Mond (D. 193)" is translunar, his "Heidenrslein (D. 257)" is deep in the loam of the earth, and his "Wandrers Nachtlied II (D. 768)" contemplates the star-spangled heavens. And it only gets better from there. His "Nacht und Trume (D. 827)" is the clear breath of dreams, his "Der Zwerg (D. 771)" is the hot breath of a nightmare, his "An die Musik (D. 547)" is a hymn, and his "Du bist die Ruh (D. 776)" is a sacrament. And then there's his "Erlknig (D. 328)," one of the most terrifying aural apparitions ever made manifest in music sung with Bostridge singing the parts of the narrator, the father, the song, and the Erlknig as if death rode hard at his heels. This is as great a recital of Schubert songs as has ever been recorded.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - Alan Blyth
Bostridges growing band of devoted admirers are sure to be satisfied by this selection from Schuberts most popular songs. They will once more wonder at his famed engagement with the text in hand and his innate ability both to sing each piece in an entirely natural manner and at the same time to search out its inner meaning, everything achieved without a vocal or technical mishap within hearing.
