Schubert: Piano Quintet "The Trout/Forellenquintet"; Adagio and Rondo concertante

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
Domus, without a doubt the best piano quartet of all time, deserves better than this reissue. Not that its 1989 coupling of Schubert's "Piano Quintet" and "Adagio & Rondo Concertante" isn't fully worthy of being reissued. Like virtually every other recording it ever made, Domus' Schubert disc is brilliantly performed, subtly interpreted, and joyously musical. No, what it doesn't deserve is to be given no more credit in the liner notes than the name of the group. Like virtually every other recording it ever made, Domus' Schubert disc is brilliantly performed, subtly interpreted, and joyously musical. For the record, Domus was pianist Susan Tomes, violinist Krysia Osostowicz, violist Timothy Boulton, and cellist Richard Lester were augmented in the quintet with bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku. Each of the players is clearly a virtuoso -- listen to Osostowicz soar in the solo lines of the "Adagio & Rondo" or Tomes float arpeggios in the quintet -- but the group is more than the sum of its parts; it is a union of strong individuals dedicated to giving themselves to the music. And those strong individuals deserve to be named in the liner notes. Anything less is shameful. Virgin Classics reissue sounds just like the original: more or less clear at the high end, but a little tubby in the mid-range and just a wee bit thick in the bottom.
