Schubert: Quintet in C Major, Der Hirt Auf Dem Felsenby Rudolf Serkin
Legendary violinist and teacher Felix Galimir entered history with his amazing recording of Alban Berg's Lyric Suite, approved by the composer himself. Fortunately, he also left us many satisfying performances of older classics. The most delightful is this all-star Schubert feast from the Marlboro Festival, with an affectionately tender String Quintet, played with cellist Peter Wiley and fiddler Pamela Frank, among others. Galimir's direct way with this music -- without a trace of affectation -- inspires his younger colleagues to take a similarly pure approach to Schubert's angelic work. An added bonus is the great American soprano Benita Valente in Schubert's beloved song "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen," accompanied by the mighty pianist Rudolf Serkin and clarinettist Harold Wright, both masters of Schubertian style.
