Schubert: The Complete Songs, Vol. 3

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
The third volume of Graham Johnson's Schubert edition just gets better and better. But as good as Murray's performance of "Der Jüngling und der Tod D. 545" is -- and she superbly captures both the terror and the consolation of the song -- her performances get better as the disc progresses. It helps that Johnson has programmed so many of Schubert's songs to texts by Mayrhofer; Schubert dearly ...

But as good as Murray's performance of "Der Jüngling und der Tod D. 545" is -- and she superbly captures both the terror and the consolation of the song -- her performances get better as the disc progresses. It helps that Johnson has programmed so many of Schubert's songs to texts by Mayrhofer; Schubert dearly loved his despairing friend and his sympathetic settings of "Rückweg D. 476" and "Liedesend D. 473" are wonderfully affecting in Murray's performances. Better yet, though, are her terrifying and disturbing performances of Collin's melodramatic "Der Zwerg D. 771" and her endless yearning in his heartrending "Nacht und Träume D. 827." But best of all is her performance of Mayrhofer's "Abschied D. 475," a mawkish and morbid text that Schubert's sublime setting and Murray's transcendent interpretation elevate to high art. Johnson's accompaniment fits Murray like a designer gown and his program notes are among the finest ever writen.
