This groundbreaking book dispels the myths perpetuated by some bestselling diet books that may help people lose weight, but will put them on the fast track to disease. Based on sound research and the success of thousands of people, The Schwarzbein Principle proves that excess weight, degenerative disease and accelerated aging can be controlled - and reversed - in a healthful way.

The Schwarzbein Principle is a holistic guide to achieving lasting weight loss, normalizing metabolism and maintaining ideal body composition through lifestyle and nutrition. By bringing the internal systems into balance, the Schwarzbein program has been proven to: reverse type II diabetes; free people from food cravings for chocolate, caffeine and sugar; cure depression and mood swings; and reduce body fat while building lean tissue. The nutritional program consists of two phases -Healing and Maintenance - which are easy to adopt into any lifestyle. Instead of shunning fat, the program advocates eating all of the good fats and proteins your body needs as well as an unlimited portion of non-starchy carbohydrates. By incorporating the lifestyle components of stress management, exercise and eliminating harmful stimulants, program participants experience renewed energy and vitality.

Chapter 1: What is the Accelerated Metabolic Aging Process?

We are all going to age and die, because it is impossible to stop normal aging. But you have more control over aging than you might believe. In fact, you can improve your metabolism, look and feel younger, achieve your ideal body composition and delay the degenerative diseases of aging by simply avoiding the habits that accelerate the normal aging process.

Before reading the patient interviews' throughout this book, which explore the degenerative diseases of accelerated metabolic aging in further detail, you must understand what metabolic aging means and how certain habits accelerate this process. As you learn about the accelerated metabolic aging process, you will understand what you can do to heal your metabolism, which in turn will improve your quality of life and increase your longevity.

What Is Metabolism?

In popular terminology, metabolism is defined as the amount of energy a person's body burns. However, burning energy is only a small fraction of what your metabolism does. Metabolism is the combined effects of all the varied biochemical processes that continually occur in your body on a cellular level. These processes enable every individual component of your body to function, making it possible for you to think, digest food, move and perform all the functions of a living, breathing being. Some of these functions include: bone and tissue regeneration, elimination, fertility, functions of all internal organs, mood, vision, hormone production, heart pumping and talking.

Regeneration processes are divided into two categories: Those that build the body up and those that breakthe body down. Your body is made up of dynamic tissues such as nails and hair that your body constantly replaces. This breaking-down process is essential for clearing out the old cells and cellular material (enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters) to make room for the new.

Aging and Hormones

Hormones are the chemical communicators within your body that direct the cellular building processes. Hormones, and the messages they send, are essential for breaking down old cells and making new cells. Likewise, healthy new cells are important for hormone production. When a particular hormone system breaks down, as with the loss of estrogen from the ovaries, it affects all the other processes in the entire physiological system because the systems of the body are interconnected. As your body loses cells and hormone levels decline, your body breaks down more than it builds up, and the end result is aging.

Cellular Aging

To explain, in simple terms, how cells age, I will focus on two types of cells: stem cells and committed cells. Stem cells have one purpose: to produce committed cells. Under the direction of various hormones, stem cells divide slowly over the course of your lifetime to make new stem cells.

Committed cells perform all the biochemical processes of your metabolism. These cells are short-lived; they are constantly being replaced by new committed cells.

With the normal wear and tear of time, your stem cells wear down and produce fewer and less-efficient committed cells. As your committed cells continue to decrease and become less efficient, your body breaks down more than it builds up. Because there are fewer and fewer committed cells available, and because more of them are less efficient, your metabolism (your body's ability to carry out chemical and other processes) goes into a decline.

If your stem cells continued to produce an adequate supply of perfect committed cells, your metabolism would not age and you would not age. Your vitality and health would never decline. But the decreased efficiency of your metabolism is the natural and inevitable result of cellular aging.

In summary, normal cellular aging is a cycle that goes like this: Stem cells make committed cells, committed cells make hormones, hormones direct the stem cells to make more committed cells, and so on. Normal cellular aging results as committed cells die but do not get replaced, or are replaced with less efficient committed cells. Because, ultimately, our bodies will be made up of both stem cells and committed cells that are imperfect or that have been damaged by a variety of factors (aging, free radicals, radiation, toxins, prolonged high insulin levels and so on), we will all age and die. There is no way to prevent normal cellular aging.

Accelerated Metabolic Aging

Due to various genetic differences, everyone is programmed to live a certain number of years. Achieving your individual maximum life expectancy requires that you maintain a healthy, functioning metabolism. However, when unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits interfere with hormone production, the metabolic system breaks down faster than normal. This premature breakdown is what I call "accelerated metabolic aging."

Naturally, if you are aging rapidly on the cellular level, you are going to look older and feel older much faster. Though you cannot change normal metabolic aging, you do have control over accelerated metabolic aging. In fact, it is possible to stop and even heal some of the damage done to your body by the accelerated metabolic aging process. Some nutrition and lifestyle habits that can accelerate this process are shown in the box below.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Habits That Accelerate Metabolic Aging

  • Alcohol
  • Artifical sweeteners
  • Caffeines
  • Excessive and/or unnecessary thyroid replacement therapy
  • Lack of exercise
  • Poor nutrition
  • Prescription or over-the-counter drug use
  • Steroids
  • Stimulant and other recreational drugs
  • Stress
  • Tobacco...

What People are Saying About This

Larry Hagman
When I had my liver transplant four years ago, I was diagnosed as diabetic and knew I had to make some serious eating and lifestyle changes. To my relief, after reading The Schwarzbein Principle I found that those changes were going to be pretty easy. I could eat all the red meat, eggs, butter and cream I wanted. I lost 25 pounds in five months and I look and feel better. My cholesterol level is the best it's ever been and I am healthier than I have been in years. I no longer have to inject insulin because my diabetes is under control.

I found how to regain and maintain my health. Diana's book provides much more than a diet plan. She wrote a healthy life plan in an easy to understand and apply format. Diana is an endocrinologist who gracefully explains the contribution of our hormones to health, the effects of carbs, fats, protein and additives on hormone production, and how to design your eating to optimize health. Her plan does not create feelings of deprivation or hunger, as you can eat anything. Calories don't count. She defines which foods will not cause the insulin production that creates fat, and when it is acceptable to eat high insulin producing food. The reading of this book made me aware of the cause of health problems I share with many members of my family and had blamed on genetics. Over the last 15 years I've been gaining 5 lbs. a year although I was exercising and following the USDA's food pyramid. Using her guidelines, I lost 20 lbs. over the 1st 4 months, followed by an additional 20 lbs. in the 5th month. As my body became healthier, it accelerated its return to my optimal weight and overall health. I also incorporated information I gathered from Richard and Rachael Heller, Suzanne Somers (fantastic recipes), and Atkins to make a comfortable transition plan for myself into this enjoyable and healthy life-style.

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who was not diabetic, but was concerned about the amount of carbs he was eating and how carbs affected his body. After reading the first chapter of this book I was amazed to learn about how some of the foods that doctors tell diabetics to eat are making diabetics get worse not better. It is an amazing book for diabetics as well as people who just want to learn to eat more healthly. I would highly recommed this book!!

I first started doing the Suzanne Somers plan and was introduced, like most people, by the intro to her second book. This book will open your eyes like no other 'diet' book. Sorry, I did lowfat for years--no wonder I can't get rid of it! I've still got my 'skinny jeans,' and I'm hoping to be in them before the end of the year. I'm also going for 'toned' with Strong Women Stay Young (another eye-opener.) If you buy only one book this year on health and nutrition, buy this one. If you can buy one more, get Strong Women Stay Young along with this book. You will NOT be disappointed.

Schwarzbein's diet is really a lifestyle change. I took off 30 pounds when I first changed my diet to Schwarzbein's Principle. I have been on this regime for 10 years and after years of calorie dieting with no results, I finally found what works for me. This is not a diet per se, but a way to change your eating habits to be effective. I highly recommend this book!

This book has helped me to make sense of how diet, diabetes, and multiple autoimmune diseases effect my body. It is wonderfully written, simple to follow and understand. It is written is common language-- instead of medical terminology-- I've shared it with several friends and it has helped them also to understand how the choices they make enfluence their health.

After reading the introduction, anyone who has been unsucessful is their weightloss endeavors will finally understand why. Dr Schwarbien had my attention from the first information about Insulin Resistance. If you really want to know WHY your not losing weight or losing the weight but not feeling healthy, she explains what happens to everything we put in our mouths from healthy foods to quick-fix stimulants. After reading the first couple chapters, you will not want to touch a simple carbohydrate EVER again. Her book is a mental wake-up call!!!

I've tried every kind of diet, even been on the Atkins diet, not saying I didn't lose any weight on any of the diets. I just always found them hard to stick to for life. I've just recently read and started this diet 'The Schwarzbein Principle' it's a great diet, in 2 days I lost 5 lbs. It's not as restictive as Atkins, but you still get the weight lost, energy, and feel great and are eating healthy. You eat good Carbs and good fats. You are limited to you carb intake only 60 a day depending on how active you are. So give it a try.... Any diet will work as long as you stick to it.

The principles make sense for repairing diet-worn cells. Probably most people who read this book are overweight or type II diabetic, and they see results in weight loss, too. I am not overweight, but wanted to eliminate cravings for simple carbohydrates. I noticed more muscle definition at first (I am a runner), but that happens when carbohydrates are restricted. It is not permanent if one increases carbs to a normal amount, even when they are complex carbs. This really is not for EVERYBODY because NO diet plan is suited to all people. If it is intuitively appealing, try it! If not, continue your search.

This is one of the best books written on the subject of health and weight loss. As far as being high fat,the book recommendsa diet high in NATURAL,REAL FATS AND PROTEIN(Which the body needs to build and repair itself). I would advice the previous reviewer to actually read a book all the way through before they start bad mouthing it. So I would advice everyone to read it for yourself and then make up your own mind.

I have learned alot from reading this book. I was doing the Zone before and was getting good results, but was tempted to do a straight protein diet to loss weight faster. After reading the schwarzbein Principle, it reaffirmed the idea that I had read in Dr. Sears book the devastating effects of a very, very low or almost zero carbohydrate diet. The illustrations in the book easily described the actions your body takes in response to eating certain foods. also, I never considered sarotonin levels. I am on the diet now and I am believing that I will continue to loss weight by taking in a little lower carbohydrates than Dr. Sears suggests, but still not too low to start ketosis; I am trying to gain muscle not lose it! I also have the Schwarzbein cookbook which I am enjoying greatly! Thank you so much for writing this book, and I would suggest it to all who are desiring a 'true' education in nutrition.
