Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
This is one of my favorite books in the "National Geographic Science Chapters" series. Thompson addresses one of the basic questions of life—how to do more with less. The answer: use machines, specifically simple machines—the inclined plane, the screw, and so forth. Each short chapter describes the physics of one machine and then offers examples of how this machine is used in our world. He alternates between big projects (the inclined plane was used to build the Egyptian pyramids) and more machines that children would know well (scissors use two levers working together). The writing manages to explain the physics simply and with energy. The photos are also engaging. At the end of this book and others in the series National Geographic spends two pages explaining the basics of report writing. Readers are instructed to go through seven steps, from choosing a topic "neither too big nor too small," to handing in the finished report. While a bit simplified, this is surely useful information. Other back matter includes a glossary, a list of further sources, and an index. Highly recommended for early nonfiction readers.
