Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Sulock
This nonfiction chapter book introduces the subject of one of earth's mysteries: caves. The introduction discusses "Into the Earth," defining what caves are and where they are found. The first chapter, "Inside a Cave," explains how caves are geologically formed—both through descriptions and a detailed illustration—and continues by explaining the rock formations found inside caves. Chapter two covers life in caves, discussing plants and animals found in the different light zones, while chapter three, "Types of Caves," explains ice and sea caves as well as lava tubes. Chapter four, "Spelunking," defines how people explore these dark and dangerous environments. The conclusion includes a report guide with tips on writing an A+ report, a glossary of cave terminology, and a list of books and web resources for additional reading. Part of National Geographic's "Science Chapters" series, the book stems from National Geographic's Caves (2004) Windows on Literacy Program. Each chapter features color photographs showing different types of caves, cave animals, and cave explorers in action. Overall it makes a solid reference for budding geologists.
