Children's Literature
This state-of-the-art compendium of basic information about all major areas of science, including chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology and biology, will be a useful addition to science classrooms, school and public libraries and personal reference collections. The book is organized into major subject areas that are subdivided into individual topics. For example, the Earth and Space section includes articles about the universe, galaxies, stars, the Sun and so forth. Scientific terms and topics are carefully cross-referenced throughout the text. Individual articles are clearly written, the scientific concepts are accurately explained and the information is up-to-date. The beautifully designed layout features imaginative, colorful illustrations that enhance the explanatory power of the text. In the article about stars, nebulae are described as the birthplace of stars and their description is accompanied by a stunning reproduction of the famous Hubble Telescope photograph of the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula. Each article ends with a list of Internet links that young readers can gain access to either directly or through the usborne-quicklinks site. The "Stars" article lists sites at NASA, National Geographic, and The Internet sites are generally excellent and often interactive. They are easy to get to directly, but access is not as reliable through the usborne-quicklinks site. The last section of the book contains information about how to do research on the web, review questions for each section, various scientific tables, a list of scientists and inventors, a chronology of key dates in science and a comprehensive glossary. 2000, Usborne, $39.95.Ages 8 to 14.
