Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book looks like great fun. It has over 200 pages of colorful, large print descriptions of science projects, activities, and explorations about such topics as "Air & Flight," "Shapes & Structures," and "Sound & Music." There are many pictures that illustrate procedure as well as results. There are investigation introductions, numbered procedural steps and descriptions of "Why it Works." But sadly, the book itself does not work. The pictures depict well-crafted, colorfully completed projects, but they are not detailed enough for the reader to follow the often-repeated instructions to insert, glue, fold, or position "as pictured." Several investigations require the mixing of certain ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, water or salt; but the amounts of these ingredients are not given. The explanations of the science involved seem cursory, as if intended for a very young audience, yet many of the projects deal with complicated topics such as resistance, wavelengths and conduction. This book is beautiful and expansive. It is really a shame that it's not more usable. 2000, Copper Beech Books/The Millbrook Press,

Gr 4-6-Even the most reluctant science students will want to try one of the many experiments presented here. The topics range from air and flight and simple machines to weather and electricity. A double-page spread is devoted to each project, which begins with a list of equipment needed, followed by clearly numbered, step-by-step directions. The large, colorful photos adequately show the progress of each activity as well as the finished product. The section on "Why It Works" explains the outcome that readers are working toward. This book supports the national goals for science and encourages all readers to better understand how things work.-Carol Wichman, Northridge Local Schools, Dayton, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
