Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bryan C Heiderscheit, PhD, PT (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Description: This book provides a reasonable survey of the role and application of nutrition in the clinical management of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
Purpose: The purpose of this text is to serve as "a reference for the evidence-based integration of nutrition into medical treatment." As the editor acknowledges, nutrition is an often overlooked component of the examination and treatment process for musculoskeletal conditions.
Audience: According to the editor, this book is aimed at scientists and clinicians involved in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. The book is likely to be most beneficial for students in health professions and practicing clinicians, as experts in the nutritional science fields may find the depth of some materials insufficient. The editor has assembled a diverse group of scientists and clinicians to cover an expansive field and help bridge the gap between science and practice.
Features: The first two sections of the book provide a review of the key aspects of nutrition, with the remaining sections applying this information to the clinical management of various musculoskeletal conditions (e.g. osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and muscle strains and atrophy). The initial chapters addressing primary nutrients are good surveys of the field and generally inclusive, but mixed on quality. For example, information regarding the important dietary and supplement needs following bariatric surgery were found to be incomplete. The chapters involving bone health and nutrition are well covered with a summary of clinical guidelines useful to the practitioner. At times, however, the scientific evidence to guide the integration of nutrition into the clinical decision making process is somewhat limited, such as the chapter concerning muscle strains.
Assessment: In general, the book provides a concise and well-organized resource that promotes the importance of nutrition in the management of common musculoskeletal conditions. Despite some limitations, the combined basic science and clinical application content contained in this book allow it to serve as an effective nutritional reference for many health professionals.
