Description: This is an attempt to integrate the scientific basis of musculoskeletal rehabilitation with the principles of evidence-based practice. It is unique in that the accompanying CD-ROM contains all the references with direct links to available MEDLINE abstracts.
Purpose: The authors state that their purpose was to merge research findings from basic science with the appropriate applications as they pertain to clinical practice. They intend the book to assist in answering the who, what, when, where, why, and how of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. The book is part of a three-volume series written by the authors. Each book in the series is intended to complement the others to allow for greater breadth of coverage. The authors have chosen a commendable objective, which they have accomplished.
Audience: The book is primarily written for students and professionals in the field of sports medicine and physical therapy. Select chapters are also relevant for exercise physiologists and health and fitness professionals. The editors are recognized experts in the field and they have collaborated with an impressive group of coauthors.
Features: The first of the book's two major sections covers the basic theories and research that establish the scientific foundations of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The 14 chapters in this section thoroughly cover inflammation and repair of tissue, skeletal muscle and non-contractile elements such as bone and cartilage, and mechanisms of pain. Section two focuses on clinical practice guidelines for developing rehabilitation programs. This includes stabilization training, resistance training, and even the psychology of the injured patient. Even though the text is void of color, each of the abundant figures, tables, and graphs is well done. Unique chapters include imaging of joints and musculoskeletal tissue, fracture management, and functional testing for return to activity. The companion CD-ROM is easy to use and thoughtfully laid out. Even though the book covers a wide range of topics, the writing is concise.
Assessment: This will serve as an excellent resource for students in training and also novice and veteran clinicians. Much is covered and I could see the book becoming a primary reference for getting a complete education on how to approach musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Very few books can match the topics and the detail this book provides. I highly recommend it.

I chose this book as a companion for the many textbooks I have which give the methodology of assessment techniques but do not cover the theory in depth. The text is easy to read yet still very comprehensive and summary boxes throughout the text provide the key points in a clear, concise way....The content covers everything you could want when working within the field of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. It includes a chapter on psychology, effects of aging, nerves and neurophysiology, pharmacology etc as well as the topics you would expect. It is not a quick reference textbook but if you need a through understanding of the background behind musculoskeletal rehab it is perfect."
