From The CriticsReviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: This comprehensive book will be invaluable for those performing sclerotherapy. The treatments for eliminating unwanted veins on the face, chest, legs, hands, and genitalia are covered in detail. All the different sclerosing agents are discussed with their advantages, disadvantages, and potential complications and their management.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists on the latest techniques and substances used to treat varicose veins and venular telangiectasias.
Audience: The audience includes all physicians involved in the treatment of varicose veins.
Features: Studying this book will equip you with all the pertinent information you need in order to have a successful sclerotherapy practice. The numerous colorful diagrams illustrating venous anatomy and the abnormalities leading to varicose veins are excellent. A step-by-step description of how to apply support stockings can be translated into a useful patient handout. The chapter on Doppler ultrasound provides you with the principles for performing Doppler in the office for evaluating venous insufficiency. The appendix includes guidelines on procedural coding and how to submit claims for reimbursement.
Assessment: The book is accompanied by a DVD of the techniques. I hope the next edition shows videos of the procedures being performed on live patients. This is a good investment if you plan to do, or are already offering, sclerotherapy in your practice. It is the most up-to-date reference available.
