Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Kaplan's intended thriller is so overdrawn that it may make readers giggle rather than tremble at the perilous exploits of Nick Curry, aka Scorpion. A CIA undercover agent in the Middle East, Scorpion escapes from certain death again and again, trying to foil a Soviet-backed plot by Prince Abdul Sa'ad. The prince plans to kill the king of a major oil-producing country, thereby cutting America off from oil supplies and eventually forcing the U.S. to surrender to Russia. The other mission demanding the agent's utmost courage and daring is rescuing lovely Kelly Ormont, sold by white slavers to Abdul and subjected to his sexual perversions. Since the evil prince is guarded by fierce henchmen in an impenetrable fortress, Scorpion seems likely to fail but he survives hacking, bludgeoning, betrayal by colleagues and any number of improbable disasters. All in all, the story is in the true comic-book tradition. (March 18)

This thriller has a good main character and plot with exotic locals and a twist ending. Not the greatest of the genre, but I'd certainly be up to reading more books featuring "the scorpion".

    Quite an enjoyable read.
There were a lot of Arabian terms (such as descriptions of clothing) that I didn't know, so, I ended up looking many words up in my ebook dictionary. But its always nice to learn something new.
The action was very good though.

Scorpion is a typical eighties based espionage thriller with the main character an independent spy / mercenary named after the stinging desert insect. He is given a mission from the CIA to rescue a kidnapped daughter of a U.S. Senator. The novel follows the Scorpion on his travels to the Middle East to try and discover where Kelly has been sold into slavery. It is clear from the beginning the Kremlin is involved in this abduction but to what end?. Andrew Caplan has written a very good Cold War style thriller but is also relevant for today's world with the middle Easter location. I enjoyed the book however it would have been better had the author not dwelled so much on painting the Scorpion's background and childhood. This information could have been delivered in a more discrete and minimal way to avoid the appearance of padding and distracting from the story.
