Overview

Sometime after dark on March 27, 2010, Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was found dead next to his four-wheeler on the grounds of his ranch on the Arizona-Mexico border. Krentz and his dog, Blue, had been missing since that morning. They were last heard from when he radioed his brother to say that he’d found an illegal alien on the property and was going to offer him assistance. The man Krentz encountered that day shot and killed him and his dog, without warning, before escaping to Mexico.

It’s difficult to overstate the impact of Krentz’s death, which turned the issue of Arizona’s unsecured border—a crisis that the federal government had repeatedly ignored—into a national concern. As Arizona sheriff Larry Dever said in his testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, “We cannot sit by while our citizens are terrorized, robbed, and murdered by ruthless and desperate people who enter our country illegally.” This momentum helped pass SB 1070, a bill that authorizes local law enforcement under certain conditions to question persons reasonably suspected of being illegal aliens, which Governor Jan Brewer and the state legislature had been working on for months. With the passage of this controversial bill, the state of Arizona became ground zero in the impassioned debate over illegal immigration. The Democrats and the media went into overdrive, denouncing the state and its governor as racists and Nazis.

Governor Brewer, a lifelong Arizona resident with deep ties to the community, was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1982, and hasn’t lost an election since. As a state official, she watched with increasing dismay as illegal immigration exploded across Arizona’s border, and noticed the devastating effect it was having on the state. Causing an escalation in violence, an influx of drugs, and prisons and hospitals to fill to overflowing, this problem was not only wreaking havoc on the moral fabric of the community but placing an even greater strain on Arizona’s beleaguered health, educational, and social welfare networks. Growing frustrated with the failure of the federal government to respond to her pleas for assistance, Governor Brewer led the state to action. Scorpions for Breakfast is Brewer’s commonsense account of her fight to secure our nation’s border in the face of persistent federal inaction. Her book is vital reading for all Americans interested in the real change that can happen when local leaders take the initiative to preserve our country and our laws.

Meet the Author

Jan Brewer became Arizona’s twenty-second governor in January 2009, upon the resignation of then-Governor Janet Napolitano, inheriting one of the worst fiscal crises in the country for any state. Born to a close-knit family during World War II, Governor Brewer aggressively confronts the trials of life and government with conservative common sense. Governor Brewer is now serving her second term, after winning a convincing 2010 election victory.

Few if any elected officials in Arizona have a broader range of productive experience in public service than Governor Jan Brewer. She was first elected to public office in 1982 to the Arizona House of Representatives and later to the State Senate. She also served on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and was elected twice as Arizona’s secretary of state. A tough leader, Governor Brewer has always fought for her fellow citizens during her twenty-nine years of public service.

Governor Brewer and her husband, John, live in Glendale, Arizona, where they raised their three sons.

A Must Read for Everyone in Every State of America!

Governor Jan Brewer gives first hand insight to the issues of illegal immigration that continually hurt the great state of Arizona, it's people, and every state of America. I truly admire her patriotism, wisdom, and dedication to her country. Quoting John F. Kennedy, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Governor Brewer is a great example of working hard for the betterment of her state and her country. I highly recommend this book.

Highly Recommended! A must read for anyone who loves the USA!

This book made me quite angry with the federal government. It also confirmed what I already felt about Jan Brewer and Arizona. I wish her and the state the best and I am looking at ways to support them. Buy Arizona products.

Doing the right thing isn't easy

"Janbo" tells her story from the heart. I thought I knew a lot about her, but this book gave me new insight into who she is. Her mother's mantra - that doing the right thing often means doing the hard thing - is a recurring theme in the book, and sheds much light on the choices she makes every day. The book will certainly upset a lot of people, because she isn't afraid to name names and she definitely isn't afraid to give specific examples of how they are not doing their jobs.

    Scorpions for Breakfast

I have read a good deal of the book, but not yet finished. I believe her writing to be accurate. Unless you have ever lived where such problems are faced on a daily basis, you might not fully understand.

    Interesting and informative

As an Arizona resident, I found this book to be informative and eye opening. I've lived thru most of the incidents discussed in the book, but found I didn't know or remember the details. This book is written in Jan Brewer's voice and reading it is like she were sitting across the table telling me what had happened. Interesting read.

The Truth Behind the Media Distortion

Anyone seeking the facts about the hardships faced by Arizona residents because of illegal immigration and the courageous stance taken by Govenor Brewer to address her states greatest problem must read this book! After reading the facts, one will quickly realize how the Obama Administration is stirring the pot with falsehoods rather than seeking to resolve the real problem. People who desire the truth on the effects of illegal immigration on a border state and the overall effect it is having on our nation should read this book to help form an educated position necessary to address an ever growing problem that will become worse with neglect and political pandering.

Recommend reading for those who love this country.

Jan tells the truth about the situation in AZ that the mainstream media doesn't want you to know. She pulls no punches when pointing out how disasterous our current adminsitration's policy is regarding border security. As a resident of AZ I worry for our state as well as our country when no one wants to stop the criminal invasion that's so obviously happening.
    A must read.

    Reaction to opposition review

    Great book!!!

My question to the critique regarding 90% of the 13,000 calls that Gov. Brewer recieved prior to signing the SB 1070 into law.......if she was only signing to be reelected.......wouldn't those calls, calls that one would assume were from AZ citizens (and if citizens from out of state are calling, one would hope that their opinions would take a back seat to the citizens the governors office exists to govern and protect!) wouldnt they be representitive of the voters and therefore result in 90% of the population voting AGAINST her???

It sounds like she did what she believed to be the right thing EVEN WHEN it was unpopular. If her campaign was so out of touch, how did she win her reelection?
