Meet the Author

Hilary Patrick is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Law at Edinburgh University. She is vice convener of the Law Society's Mental Health & Disability Committee and is a former legal advisor to The Scottish Association of Mental Health.

Joe Thomson is a Scottish Law Commissioner and Visiting Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Tom Guthrie is Senior Lecturer in Private Law at the University of Glasgow. His research interests include Intellectual Property Law, especially justifications for IP protection, patents and Trade marks, law relating to social work practice, property law.

David Cockburn is known as one of Scotland's leading property and planning lawyers. He has been in practice for more than 30 years and has acted in many major property developments in that time. He works with a number of developers and investors and continues to advise retailers such as Boots on property matters. An accredited specialist in planning law, he advises and appears at planning inquiries for developers, statutory consultees, planning authorities and other interest groups.

Robin Mitchell qualified as a solicitor in 1992 and is now a Partner with ACH Shoosmiths in Edinburgh. He is the co-author of Commercial Leases, a practical textbook dealing with the drafting and negotiation of commercial leases in Scotland, described by the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland as "a useful book for practitioners and students alike...of particular assistance to solicitors who are new to commercial leasing". He lives in Edinburgh with his wife and three children, enjoying in his limited spare time a number of sports and attending concerts. Brought up in Aberdeen, Robin then studied at Edinburgh University, obtaining an honours degree in law.

Jean McFadden combined a career as lecturer at the University of Strathclyde's Law School with years of service as a councillor in Glasgow from 1971. She was awarded the CBE in 1992. Leader of the Council, 1980-1986 and 1992-1994.

Mark Lazarowicz was elected as Member of Parliament for Edinburgh North and Leith in June 2001 and reelected in May 2005. He sits in the House of Commons as a "Labour and Co-operative MP" and is a member of the Labour & Co-operative Parliamentary Group. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Scottish Constitutional Convention. Prior to being elected as an MP, Mark worked as an Advocate at the Scottish Bar.
