Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, lives in a cold, unnamed Canadian town, plays bass in a band called Sex Bob-Omb and has a very cute 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian girlfriend, Knives Chau. His "precious little life" is amiably unstructured, and he drifts, happily unemployed, between band practice and time spent with Knives. His relationship with Knives is chaste-walks, chats and hugs-although Knives is getting bigger ideas. "We haven't even held hands," Scott explains. "It's just nice, you know." But then he starts having dreams about Ramona Flowers, a mysterious, equally cute and perfectly legal hipster chick on Rollerblades who delivers books for Amazon.com. Ramona is anything but simple, and O'Malley's tale of adorable slackers in love is transformed into a wildly magically manga-kung fu fantasy adventure. We meet the first of Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends, Matthew Patel, who challenges Scott and his band to a supernatural martial arts duel right out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. O'Malley has crafted a delightfully hybrid comics love story. It's an alt-lit, rock 'n' roll graphic novel with wonderful manga-influenced drawing and a comically mystical plot that manages to capture both the genuine intimacies and serial dishonesties of young love. I have never been much of a comic man myself, often choosing to favor literature. However, I've found myself on a serious comic kick, and the Pilgrim comics are some of the first I've picked up thus far. This first little volume, Precious Little Life, offers plenty to the reader. There's plenty of humor and charm within the characters. The banter is witty and effortless. The illustrations are well drawn and, fortunately, don't take themselves seriously. The characters are almost always likable, and by the end of these comics, guys will want to find their own Ramona Flowers. Scott is your typical young adult who goes through the vanilla trials and tribulations of a modern man, with a twist. His friends offer little in the way of support, instead choosing witty banter to somehow make Scott feel better. Even the bad guy is a decent character, even if we don't see very much of him. All in all, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life is a great start to a fantastic series. It takes less than an hour to read, but it's well worth it.

Hadn't heard of this until after seeing the movie. In that, it was awesome. Finally got to reading this, having seen it on the shelves one day. And was in the mood for a short read. This one was not only awesome, but fun, quirky, strange and that artwork was also really good. And the game looked good too.

I fell in love with this book while I was reading this. The characters are so great and funny. The story is very strange, but I was lost in this and i was really happy to be lost in the magic.
