My friend and I both read this book. We really loved the fighting and that the main character is a powerful and colorful woman. The other main character, Ulrich, is a perfect match for her. My friend that read this is a guy and he was totally into the character development. He was surprised that a female author was so "into" the mind of a man. They are recognizable figures that you can identify with. My friend and I also dug the detailed aspects that made it feel real. Each part of the book used a lot of description and pulled us both in. Did I mention we loved the fighting?! You grow attached to the characters and their adventures because their struggles seem real especially if you mirror it to a medieval era. I'm really into SCA and it would be fun to reenact this book or scenes from it as it would be easy to create costuming and stuff from here. Things we would have liked to see changed: 1. We would have liked the book to be arranged differently. There was too much stuff to thumb through before the story began. 2. Some of the descriptions of hunting and tracking were off according my friend who is into that kind of stuff. 3. WE WERE BUMMED THAT THE SECOND BOOK ISN'T OUT YET Overall, we'd read this book again and share it with friends. We are excited about new stuff from this author!

Interesting mix of fantasy, Christianity and adventure. The characters are interesting and the story moves along nicely. I cant wait to read the next one!

I loved this book. It was easy to read and exciting as well. I read this novel alone for two weeks straight. I couldn't put it down. Winters has outdone herself!
