Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Peffer makes his characters sing. This intense, gritty and grim story is not for the faint of heart. But such passion!" --Library Journal

"

Library Journal
Peffer's latest series entry is pure opera, a multiact tragedy enhanced with opium tea and nunchakus. Big-hearted fisherman and former attorney Michael DeCastro (Provincetown Follies, Bangkok Blues) knows he must rescue former client and big love Tuki Aparecio, who's in serious trouble in Vietnam. Still in possession of the incredibly precious ruby known as the Heart of Warriors, Tuki has been caught by Wen-Ling, a villainous dragon lady who covets the gem and won't be fooled again. Michael takes his dad with him; he's a Vietnam War vet with his own backstory and, thankfully, a fluency in Vietnamese. Stripping his protagonists down to their most basic survival instincts, Peffer makes his characters sing. VERDICT This intense, gritty, and grim story is not for the faint of heart. But such passion! Recommended for fans of Timothy Hallinan's Bangkok mysteries (The Queen of Patpong) and for those who want a thriller laced with history and a search for belief.

    Screams and Whispers is captivating

Michael Decastro is a public defender who also enjoys commercial fishing. That is, until he takes a trip to Saigon with his father to help an old friend. What he doesn't realize at first, is that Tuki has a gem in her possession that is being sought after. The antique ruby holds many secrets and the dragon lady who wants it will stop at nothing to get it. As Michael and Tuki reunite, memories awaken. Will Michael and his father be able to help Tuki? What will happen to the relationship between Michael and Tuki? Who is the mysterious dragon lady, and why does she want the ruby? The answers to these, and many other, questions await in this suspenseful novel by Randall Peffer.

What a ride! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait for the other shoe to drop. The characters are realistic and their story lines easy to follow. Mr. Pfeffer does a great job of keeping the mystery alive while drawing the reader into the characters' lives. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys mysteries and other suspenseful novels. Thank you to FSB Media for the free copy I read!

    "Screams and Whispers"

Thanks to FSB Media, for the opportunity and privilege of being allowed to read and review Randall Peffer's latest novel in his Cape Islands Novel series. "Screams and Whispers", by Randall Peffer, what a wonderful yet scary novel. Peffer has taken his thoughts and what appears to extensive research, and molded them together to provide us with a suspenseful story. This novel will keep the reader glued to the pages.
Tuki, one the main characters in this novel has in her possession a gem of great importance to it's home country in South East Asia. Wing-Lei, the Dragon Lady and self appointed person to take that precious gem away from Tuki and it's rightful owner, will not spare anything to get the gem, including kidnapping and murder. Tuki, knows of Wing-Lie's intentions and is running away from her love on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, some ten thousand miles away, from Vietnam. She does this to try and protect Michael Decastro, her lover and protector.
As Tuki's self appointed protector, Michael enlists the help of his father Ceasar Decastro a Vietnam vet. The senior DeCastro has many mixed feelings about returning a a country he left some forty years ago. He has many demons and nightmares of his time in country and is having a hard time in dealing with his son's request, but ultimately agrees to help him.
As a Vietnam vet myself, I found myself drawn to Ceasar Decastro's thoughts and feelings as he re-enters s world he has been trying to forget for forty years. The smells, tastes and scenes rekindle many emotions. Peffer has done a great job of telling this story and bringing the scenes alive in this reader/reviews mind.
From the moment you open this novel and start reading, you will not want to put it down. Follow Tuki, Michael, Ceasar and the other characters on this journey. You will not be disappointed with this story.
Thank you Randall Peffer for a GREAT read. "Screams and Whispers" is sure to be a Best Seller. Again, Thank you FSB Media for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful novel.

    an exhilarating thriller

Failed public defender and Cape Cod fisherman Michael Decastro receives an email from Tran that leads to the former getting drunk. Trans explain that his half sister, Michael's former client and ex lover, Tuki Aparecio is in trouble in Ho Chi Minh City. Tuki vanished from Michael's life over a year and a half ago.

Vicious Dragon Lady Wen-Ling demands the half-Vietnamese, half-African American hand her the valuable Heart of Warriors ruby or else. Michael decides to go to Viet Nam to rescue Tuki though he will be on the Dragon Lady's turf. His father Caesar, a Vietnam War veteran who speaks Vietnamese fluently, accompanies him to Saigon as the older man calls the city with plans to assist his son and make a side trip. Neither Decastro really knows what they are diving into as the souls of everyone they cherish including themselves isn peril.

Combining history especially the Nixon Era with a gritty urban noir in a Southeast Asian country refreshes the latest Cape Islands Mystery (see Provincetown Follies and Bangkok Blues). The story line is fast-paced from the moment the Decastro father and son arrive at Club Saigon and never slows down as several stunning twists accelerate the pace. Readers will never look at tea the same way as Randall Peffer provides an exhilarating thriller.
