Phillip LopateMore than half the book consists of pieces about historiography and art history, and when Schama's professional mind is most fully engaged, he is at his best…All in all, we should be grateful Schama has chosen to be so inclusive. Readers whose tastes differ from this reviewer's may find the food and travel essays delicious, while others will gobble up the political commentary and skim the writings on history and art. The point is, this robust, generous smorgasbord has pretty much something for every palate.
