About the Author

Judith Krantz began her career as a fashion editor and magazine article writer. Her first novel, Scruples, was an immediate top bestseller, as were all her subsequent novels—Princess Daisy, Mistral’s Daughter, I’ll Take Manhattan, Till We Meet Again, Dazzle, Scruples Two, Lovers, Spring Collection, and The Jewels of Tessa Kent. She died in 2019.

Billy woke reluctantly from a dream of such poignant happiness that she tried to cling to it as long as possible. She was running in the dream, bounding effortlessly up a flight of circular steps that led to a platform at the top of a tower from which, she knew even as she ran, she would see a radiant springtime woodland leading to the adventure of a beckoning turquoise sea. After her youngest son graduated from high school, Krantz began working on a novel, writing six-and-a-half hours a day, five days a week. After nine months Scruples was completed. "I truly enjoy writing, " the author revealed to Jill Gerston of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "If I didn't, I could never close myself in my room for almost a year." Krantz then asked family friend and lawyer Morton L. Janklow to read the manuscript. Janklow said he knew immediately that Scruples was destined to be a bestseller, and he agreed to serve as Krantz's literary agent. Although Scruples was at first rejected by an editor at Simon & Schuster, Crown Publishers eventually purchased the hardcover rights and released it in March of 1978. Four months later the novel became the number one bestseller, according to the New York Times, and remained on its bestseller list for almost one year.
