Overview

Nine years after Mibs's Savvy journey, her cousin Ledge has just turned thirteen . . .

But Ledger Kale's savvy is a total dud -- all he does is make little things fall apart. So his parents decide it's safe to head to Wyoming, where it's soon revealed that Ledge's savvy is much more powerful than anyone thought. Worse, his savvy disaster has an outside witness: Sarah Jane Cabot, reporter wannabe and daughter of the local banker. Just like that, Ledge's beloved normal life is over. Now he has to keep Sarah from turning family secrets into headlines, stop her father from foreclosing on Uncle Autry's ranch, and scumble his savvy into control so that, someday, he can go home.

Starring a cast both fresh and familiar, Scumble brilliantly melds Ingrid Law's signature heart and humor with the legendary Wild West.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Law follows her Newbery Honor-winning debut, Savvy, with a look at another family in which "thirteenth birthdays were like time bombs." It's been nine years since Mibs Beaumont's tumultuous 13th, and the spotlight now finds her cousin Ledge Kale. Ledge's "savvy"--inadvertently (and explosively) dismantling objects--has just hit, disastrously, when his family must travel from Indiana to Wyoming for a wedding. The setting allows Law to revisit the wacky clan, from Ledge's Uncle Autry, a sort of insect whisperer, and Autry's twin daughters, Marisol and Mesquite, who can levitate things up and down, left and right, "like two knobs of an Etch A Sketch." However, Ledge's talent is "as useless as a pogo stick in quicksand," so it's up to Mibs's brother Rocket to mentor him on "scumbling," a finesse move that turns problem savvies into assets. Rocket and Ledge both have romantic entanglements, and although Ledge's is unconvincing, it figures prominently in the plot. The story's chief appeal lies in Law's talents as a yarn-spinner, and the worth-repeating message about making peace with who you are. Ages 8-12. (Aug.)
Booklist
This companion to Newbery Honor Book Savvy provides the same high level of satisfying plot, delightful characters, alliterative language, and rich imagery.
Horn Book
The story's arc, complete with a nice-guys-finish-first ending, is eminently satisfying.
Children's Literature
Midway through Ingrid Law's companion to her Newbery Honor book Savvy—about kids blessed with unusual physical gifts at puberty—one of the characters offers a definition of "scumble" fairly close to the OED's. Rocket calls it a technique painters use to tone down intense colors that threaten to overwhelm a canvas. This "balancing" is what thirteen-year-old Ledger Tate must learn in order to survive his newfound ability to destroy anything metal in his immediate vicinity. (Nails, screws, and bolts fly; entire vintage Harleys are reduced to components.) Law's use of the "savvy" as a dramatic metaphor for the onset of adolescent hormones is fascinating. It is equally fascinating to watch Ledge as he begins to shape his explosions not only to impress a girl—the lethal-with-words Sarah Jane Cabot—but also to save the town of Sundance, Wyoming, from SJ's grief-maddened father. Can Ledge stop the demolition derby being orchestrated by Mr. Cabot in time to save beloved places as Willie's Five & Dime or the local junk yard? Closer to home, can he save his Uncle Autry's ranch and Bug House? Ledge is not the only one to grow as his actions begin opening up the back stories of his remarkable savvy family and friends. Law's latest is another natural addition to middle grade reading lists. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr
School Library Journal
Gr 5–7—The Beaumont family is unique. When they turn 13, they develop savvy—an unusual talent or power. IN Ingrid Law's sequel (2010) to Savvy (2008, both Dial), it's been nine years since Mib discovered her savvy, and her cousin Ledge is keeping her troubled tale in mind as he approaches his own 13th birthday. Dreams of a great running career are quickly dashed when the day comes and Ledge discovers his talent…for breaking things. Though Ledge's savvy is problematic, the family decides to head out west for a family gathering anyway, a decision they regret when Ledge manages to destroy the wedding. Ledge's parents decide to leave him on the remote ranch for the summer, hoping that he'll learn to scumble (control) his talent. As the boy's talent continues to spiral out of control, he also accidentally exposes himself to the biggest mouth in town, Sarah Jane Cabot. David Kremenitzer brings Ledger's voice to life, giving listeners both moments of great levity and strong sympathy as his life tumbles around him. Ledge's highly emotional tones are balanced with the soothing western keel of his Uncle Autry and his even toned, calming father. Although this lyrically paced story about a teen learning to love himself, hidden talents and all, can stand on it's own, it's best suited for library collections already circulating Savvy.—Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT

    Riveting

After reading Savvy by Ingrid Law, I knew that sooner or later I'd get around to reading its sequel, Scumble. This book really surprised me in an awe-inspiring way. It is the story of thirteen year old Ledge, who spends one unforgettable summer at his relative's ranch in Wyoming. I REALLY liked this book, because every teenager feels like Ledge did in the book every once in a while. The author made me really connect with the characters, which I loved. Scumble is the PERFECT companion to Savvy, and I would definitely give it a five-star rating!!!

    good read

Sophia Calianos Scumble By: Ingrid Law Scumble by Ingrid Law is a novel about a boy named Ledger who lived in Wyoming at his cousin's farm in about the year 2009. His family has a tradition that when a member of the family turns thirteen they get a power called a savvy. A savvy is a type of power that you get that enables you to do something that a mortal can't do. For example you could walk on water, float in mid air, fly,or even turn invisible. When it was Ledger's birthday his dad always wanted his savvy to be that Ledger could run at the speed of light. But when he woke up one morning he went to go slam his alarm clock to make it stop beeping he hit it and it burst into pieces. Throughout this book Ledger was challenged with dealing with his savvy. It got difficult at times. For example his family got invited to their cousin's wedding. This family is a professional at handling savvy's. But when they took a pit stop at a corner store Fedora (Ledgers sister) let a kid reporter about Ledge's age into the car. When they got to the ranch in Wyoming their Grandmother had a savvy that she could put music into jars and have it never run out of the music. Well the reporter got curious and Ledger wanted her to leave before she figured things out. So she said she would leave if he gave her the musical jar. Ledger gave her the jar which was a fatal mistake. Scumble has many positives and a couple negatives when looking at its ideas and style. The author's voice is amazing especially in the first couple of chapters when she really painted pictures in my mind to help me visualize the emotions the characters were going through. Since she has an excellent voice she painted images just like Van Gogh did when he painted Starry Starry Night on his canvas. In chapter 3 she was really good at describing the wedding or how Ledger's stomached was so twisted when he was worried. But I wish that she would have added a couple of cliff hangers so that I would have some questions rattling in my mind. Also, in the beginning and kind of in the middle she gave too many clues to what Ledgers savvy was going to be. It would have been better if she held off a little more to build the suspense. I also felt that the descriptions in the middle of the book were a little too long and wordy and took away from the focus of what was happening in the story. She went into too much detail to describe an object or how someone was feeling. My favorite part of the book was that it was easier to understand the main characters feelings because Ingrid Law used first person. For example you could really understand how disappointed Ledger was to find that his savvy was not to run at the speed of light, but that it was to burst objects into pieces. When Ingrid Law wrote she made the words easy to follow in your mind because she used really good transition words especially towards the end of the novel. Her topics were clear especially towards the end you could understand what she was thinking while she was writing the plot or the scene in this novel. I would highly recommend this book to someone who can really have the imagination to understand the high level of fantasy in this novel because there are so many unrealistic things that happen. For example there will be characters who can tear objects apart without even touching it, or somebody who creates weather with his emotions, or somebody who can float in mid air. If you like concrete facts you would have a hard

terrific whimsical coming of age tale

When he turns thirteen, Ledger Kale inherits his genetic Savvy, but hates the feeling of what he describes as red ants running wild in his blood. He especially is ashamed because he cannot control his Savvy unlike his family including his older cousin Mibs (see Savvy); his power leads to destruction of human created objects.

Fearing for their son (and society), who has not learned how to Scumble his Savvy, his parents leave Ledge and their younger daughter seven year old Fedora at the remote Wyoming insect ranch of Uncle Autry. Also staying at Flying Cattleheart Ranch are several of Ledge's cousins. Complicating the situation is thirteen year old Sarah Jane Cabot, snooping wannabe reporter who sees exposé articles on the strange extended family at the ranch. At the same time her businessman father sets out to take ownership of local establishments including Autry's ranch. Ledge knows life at the ranch is at least as complicated as back home.

This is a terrific whimsical coming of age tale that targets middle school readers (and my spouse) with its insectoid humor, but will be enjoyed by adults as a strong metaphoric novel as well. Filled with a conscience and guilt, Ledge is a fabulous narrator whether he discusses with readers the plight of destroying his father's nose trimmer, spilling his guts to feed carnivores, or the quandary caused by the snoop queen. The support cast at the ranch also brings humor to the mix. However, this is Ledge's saga as he struggles with the change from tweener to adolescence causing him emotional stress and physical imbalance; all because his Savvy has surfaced out of Scumble control.

    Best book ever!

Usually, the first book is the best. Right? Not with scumble. I didnt get this book at first, thinking it wouldnt be as good as savvy, but i was wrong. Scumble is as good as savvy, if not better. If you have doubts in your head about this book, dont. Trust me, you will love it.

Gold Star Award Winner! Ledger Kale has been waiting all of his life to find out what his Savvy is. In Ledger's family, on your 13th birthday, you have a power magically appear. Sometimes they're useful, other times they're more of a problem than their worth. On Ledger's birthday, he discovers that his Savvy is destroying everything. In an attempt to help Ledger master his new powers, his parent take him with them to the family ranch for a wedding. They then plan to leave him there for the summer. On the way there, however, he attracts the attention of the extremely stubborn and nosy Sara Jane, who knows there is something about his family worth writing a story about. Will Ledger ever find a way to control his powers? And more importantly, will he find a way to stop Sara Jane from exposing his family? SCUMBLE is a funny, entertaining fantasy adventure, especially for reluctant readers. The characters are likable and well-developed. The shortness of the chapters and the extremely well-done plot do a great job of holding the reader's interest. Those who like fantasy, adventure, superheroes, or has ever wished they had a superpower, will all enjoy reading this book and its prequel, SAVVY.
