Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
In this version of the King Midas tale, a mouse named Scuttle loves cheese as much as Midas did gold. When he rescues a beetle trapped in a spider web and is granted a wish, he wishes that everything he touches would turn to cheese. At first he thoroughly enjoys eating, until stuffed. But then his troubles begin. When thirsty, he finds that all water turns to cheese. Even his enemy Pounce the cat does. Unfortunately so does his friend Tweet the bird. Miserable, he asks for everything to return to normal. The lesson is clear: Be careful what you wish for. A variety of finely detailed, naturalistic paintings visually convey the emotions inherent in the fable. A double-page, cheesy landscape is dominated by a bulging mouse. But only a close-up vignette is needed to show Scuttle's world-turned-to-cheese dilemma. A striking single page takes us inside Pounce's gaping mouth, bordered by a full set of sharp teeth to view the cringing fat mouse in there. The end of the story is left in doubt in illustrations and text: "In loving memory of…" The high melodrama is enhanced by an elaborate typeface used in several sizes for emotional emphasis.
