Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Swimming harder still, Gremlin pushed toward the target. It was dark, but his super-powered eyesight helped him cut through the deep dark ocean. Reaching a clip of close to 25 miles per hour, Gremlin snuck up behind his target, silently and stealthily clamping a leg cuff around the enemy's legs. With a final tug to signal his comrades on the surface above, Gremlin swims away as his partners haul in the culprit. Who is this super hero of the ocean? He is a sea lion, one of thirty the U.S. Navy uses to hunt down explosives, lost equipment, and potential terrorists as they patrol and defend America's shores and interests. His job, despite the way it sounds, is more exciting than dangerous. The author takes pains to assure readers that the Navy's sea lions, despite some criticism, are never in danger. The animals are taught only to find and to mark, nothing more. Trained soldiers take over when a mine is found or a human is snared. Part of the "America's Animal Soldiers" series, this nonfiction reader is easily accessible by students at a third grade reading level, but definitely of interest to kids both above and below that level. Consultant Sam Ridgway DVM, PhD, DACZM and President, National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego, California, along with photographs from the U.S. Navy, give this text a level of authenticity not always found in nonfiction books written for elementary readers. Teachers will appreciate the book's other features, including: a facts page, glossary, brief index, bibliography, and both published and internet resource suggestions. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
