Overview

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson—a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any “normal” friends.

But things don’t stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia—only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name…the Bermuda Triangle.

Now Percy and his friends—Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson—must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family—one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon’s son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The heroic son of Poseidon makes an action-packed comeback in the second must-read installment of Rick Riordan's amazing young readers series. Starring Percy Jackson, a "half blood" whose mother is human and whose father is the God of the Sea, Riordan's series combines cliffhanger adventure and Greek mythology lessons that results in true page-turners that get better with each installment. In this episode, The Sea of Monsters, Percy sets out to retrieve the Golden Fleece before his summer camp is destroyed, surpassing the first book's drama and setting the stage for more thrills to come.
In a comic blend of Greek mythology and modern life, our protagonist, Percy (a half-god, half-human with ADHD), finds himself in a seventh-grade dodgeball game overrun by giant cannibalistic monsters. Trouble continues to follow Percy and his classmates as they journey to the Sea of Monsters -- aka the Bermuda Triangle -- to save not only Camp Half-Blood (a summer haven for demigods), but Percy's satyr friend Grover, who's being held hostage by a Cyclops, and, oh yes, all of Western Civilization. Featuring the cliff-hangers and sassy attitude kids loved in The Lightning Thief -- plus a surprising new family secret -- this outstanding sequel should win over a fresh legion of fans. From The Critics
Seventh grader Percy Jackson, who found out he was Poseidon's son in The Lightning Thief, returns in The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan, and with his fellow Olympian myth mates tries to save their beloved Camp Half-Blood from an evil and mysterious enemy. Narrator Jesse Berns is back on board, too, with the snappy delivery and all the right funny touches that make this action-packed fantasy such fun. (May) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan is best known for his bestselling YA series Percy Jackson and the Olympians and for a series of award-winning adult mysteries featuring San Antonio P.I. Tres Navarre.

Biography

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a terrific YA series by former middle school teacher and mystery writer Rick Riordan that revamps Greek mythology in a fun, fresh way kids find enthralling. A trouble-prone teen with attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, Percy is the half-blood son of Poseidon, one of 12 Olympian gods making mischief right here in 21st-century America. Praised by critics, librarians, and teachers, the Percy Jackson books have been honored with numerous awards and appear consistently on The New York Times bestseller list.

The series grew out of a sequence of bedtime stories Riordan invented for his son Haley -- who, at eight, had just been diagnosed with learning disabilities. Although Haley was having trouble in school, he loved the Greek myths and asked his dad to tell him some stories about the gods and heroes. Riordan ran through the standards from mythology, then began to invent new tales featuring some of the same characters and introducing a brave boy hero enough like Haley to make things interesting!

Haley begged his father to write the stories down, and in 2005, The Lightning Thief was published to excellent reviews. It was an instant hit with preteens, who loved the concept of a kid much like themselves -- i.e., embroiled in the everyday problems of school, family, and relationships -- embarking on heroic quests, soothing vengeful gods, and battling monsters.

In addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Riordan also writes books for adults, most notably a series of high-octane Tex-Mex thrillers featuring private investigator Jackson "Tres" Navarre, a complicated loner with an offbeat pedigree. (Tres -- pronounced "Trace" -- is a tai chi master with a Ph.D. in medieval literature who turns to detective work when he is unable to find a teaching job!) The first novel in the series, 1997's Big Red Tequila, scooped the Anthony and Shamus Awards, two of the three most prestigious prizes for Mystery & Crime fiction. Riordan completed the trifecta when his sequel, The Widower's Two-Step, won the coveted Edgar Award in 1999.

Between the two series, Riordan remains incredibly busy. For several years, he balanced writing with teaching English to middle school students. Reluctantly, he has left teaching (a career he thoroughly enjoyed) in order to write full-time, but he still harbors hopes that someday he'll return to the classroom. Meanwhile, he makes frequent visits to schools and enjoys meeting young readers on his book tours.

The only person who can save the world is a teenager named Percy Jackson

    The Sea of Monsters
    Rick Riordan
    Miramax Books
    Science Fiction

The only person who can save the world is a teenager named Percy Jackson, who lives in NYC. Percy is son of Poseidon, and Percy is the most powerful half-blood in the world! Long ago, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades agreed to never have babies again because their children were too powerful. 16 years ago Zeus had a baby named Thalia but she died and Zeus turned her into a living pine tree. Right before she died, a prophecy that the next child of Zeus, Poseidon or Hades to reach age 16 would decide the fate of the Olympians. In this book, Thalia's tree is poisoned and the only thing that can stop her from dying is a golden fleece. The problem is that nobody knows where it is. While this is happening, Camp Half-blood, the camp where some half-bloods live, is being attacked by monsters. And I wonder why monsters don't just disappear forever?

Percy Jackson he is a dynamic, protagonist and is the main character. He is son of Poseidon, a Greek Olympian, as a matter of fact one of the three most powerful ones, Poseidon god of the sea. Percy is tall, strong, brave and everything else a son of one of the big three* has to be (*the big three are the three most powerful gods, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades). Percy has a magical item called ¿Repute¿ which is a pen that turns into a celestial, bronze sword when he uncaps it. Percy is the main character because he is going to decide whether the Olympians live or die. Luke is a static, antagonist who is also the son of a god named, Hermes. He is also tall, strong, brave and everything else a son of one of the Olympians has to be. His magical items are flying shoes. His goal is to bring the Titan lord back from the dead to kill all the Olympians and half-bloods, like Percy. He is a primary character in the story because if it weren¿t for him there would be no problem. Annabeth is a static, protagonist who is daughter of Athena. Her magical item is a Yankee baseball cap that makes her invisible when she puts it on. She is very smart, pretty and strong. She basically leads the group in terms of plans. If it weren't for Annabeth, Percy would be dead. The charters in the book are so real it's hard to believe!

A few of the reasons I liked this book are that the good plot line kept me hooked and it didn't me let go for anything, not even parts that should have been boring! I could connect to most of the characters in the book because most of the characters are dyslexic, just like me. There is a lot of action in this book. The book is even interesting during the slow parts when people are talking or traveling on their missions. This book is part of a series called ¿Percy Jackson and the Olympians.¿ The other books I have read in this series are also excellent. I think everyone will enjoy ¿The Sea of Monsters¿ and I highly recommend that you read it. You won¿t be able to put it down!

    Great series of books

The whole series of Percy Jackson is great. I am 30 yr old lawyer and have read all of them. They are basically just alot of fun. The greek mythology is interesting because I dont really know much about it. The writing is mostly the same from book to book with the same types of battles and issues for Percy and his friends to endure, but it is fun enough where it doesnt get boring even after the 5th book. These will not be repeat reads for me, but they are a fun way to space out each night and explore Percy Jackson's world. Fun and enjoyable books for any age.

Even better than The Lightning Thief!

In my opinion, The Sea of Monsters one was had more extreme adventures, wisecracking one-liners, and unexpected plot twists than The Lightning Thief, and that one was pretty darn good already. Rick Riordan has a way of making things that pretty much everyone knows about (in this case, the Bermuda Triangle) into a really believable yet modern mythological idea. This second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is a very, very, good read.

Percy Jackson and his new friend Tyson are forced to play dodgeball with some rather burly new kids at his school. Of course, the game turns into a deadly fireball battle with Laistrygonian cannibals. That's just Percy's typical bad luck, though. After word gets out about Percy setting the gym (and probably the whole school) on fire, his demigod friend Annabeth takes him and Tyson to Camp Half-Blood, the only place that half-bloods, people with one parent from ancient Greek mythology and one from the everyday mortal world, can live peacefully. Percy finds out that the camp's sacred borders have been broken, and even though his enemy, the bully Clarisse, gets official permission to find out what really happened and how to save the camp, Percy and his friends set off on their own adventure of monstrous proportions.

    A very good book

I was drawn to "The Sea Of Monsters" by the way the first book "The Lighting Thief" ended. The first book was interesting, and non- stop action, which lead to the second book.
It starts right before his last couple days at school. He thought that finally out of all of these long antagonizing years, that finally he would finish the year and not get kicked out. But he was so very wrong. It all started when he began having nightmares about his best friend Grover. His mom later said something was wrong at camp, Camp Half Blood. His friend Annabeth also said that, on her arrival from another state, then they decide to go and find out just what it is that is wrong! A mystery that needed solved.
Personally, I enjoyed reading this book. It had magnificent details, and a great story-line. Rick Riordan, the author created a terrific set of sequel books. The first one was interesting, and this one is amazing. It has a lot of wisecracks, jokes, and a lot of unnatural powers.
Overall this book is good for people who like to hear about myths and non-believe creatures, but if you believe in non-believe creatures this book isn't for you. You should always read books that you like, but if you are going to believe that this stuff is real than you really shouldn't read it.
It's a good book for kids, sixth grade and up. It has details that little kids wouldn't understand. It has seventh grade vocabulary, and if you like mythical creatures, wisecracks, and the seventh grade words then this book is perfect for you.

    Memorable characters

I read this book to my 12 yr old daughter who has a reading disability. The characters were engaging and memorable with funny and poignant dialogues. She especially liked Tyson. She really enjoyed the story and wants to read more. She has even attempted to read some of it on her own which is difficult for her so that tells you how much she liked it. We have bought the rest of the books that have been written so far with the intent to read them all.

could you imagine how difficult life would be if you had dyslexia and ADHD? well percy jackson had that and had to deal with greek monsters and much more to endour when his bestfriend is kidnapped.

The characters in this story seem very real and described very well. The main character is percy jackson who is a demigod which is half human half god like herculeas and there are alot more like him all over the world. His best friend is grover the saytr and his other friend isanabeth who is the daughter of athena.

The quest begins when grover goes missing because he thinks he found the great god pan who has been missing for a long time. through the story grover sends clues through an empathy link he and percy have established. percy finds out he has to go into the sea of monsters which is the bermuda triangle.

this story is in a modern day setting.the greek gods are real and they move with western civilization mount olympus is on the empire state building and the sea of monsters is the bermuda triangle. i hope u enjoy this book

    Riordan does it again!

The Sea of Monsters is a perfect sequel to the Lightening Thief. It continues the thrilling adventures of Percy Jackson and his friends. The way Riordan weaves mythology into this book (series) is uncanny and unforgettable! His writing is "spot on", as you read you'll find yourself right there in all the action-seriously-my breath was taken away!

    Great Sequel

After I read The Lightning Thief I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It was even better than I had hoped. This book is epic and very absorbing. It's an extremely easy read I read it in probably around 3 and a half hours. I'd definitely pick it up sometime.

Percy Jackson finds a half-brother and searches for the Golden Fleece

Another gripping action-filled adventure over water has Percy Jackson, friend Annabeth, and new character Tyson the half-Cyclops searching for the golden fleece to heal Camp Half Blood's Thalia tree. Also missing is Percy's friend Grover - will they be able to find him in time? Will Percy's attitude toward Tyson change over time? Even adults will enjoy this story!

Review by Page from One Book At A Time

I'm still amazed at how the author manages to work in Greek mythology into today's world. And it works wonderfully! These books are just as believable as the Harry Potter series. Although, I see the similarities that I'm sure many people pick at. But, the context is different for me. And, that makes the story different. I find the adventures interesting and the Greek stories and lore work right into the story. These are books that kids can pick up and not realize they are actually learning something while reading it. I like watching Percy grow into accepting who he is and what his future responsibilities may be. I'm very happy that I found this series!

The best book I've Ever Read!!

The Sea of Monsters; Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan is a great fantasy book. I really liked this book because the characters always refer back to the first book because The Lightning Thief when they remember something that happened. Also I liked how the author used dialogue for the characters and not just say it himself. The setting of this book is mostly in New York at Camp Half-Blood which to mortals, it¿s only a strawberry field, but to half-blood¿s it¿s a camp for each of the different God¿s kids.
One of the major conflicts is that when the tree Thailia is poisoned and can¿t secure Camp Half-Blood, three kids: Percy , Annabeth and Tyson must go out on a journey to the Sea of Monsters( known to mortals as The Bermuda Triangle) and find evil master mind. During the story Percy Jackson has a dream of his friend Grover in need of help, but when Grover tells him he found the Fleece to save the camp, the camp travels out to find him. Also an old enemy Luke is so suspicious of this crime, but Percy doesn¿t know what he¿s capable of. Next, when the God of Thieves helps him, Percy wonders¿ is this good or a trick?
The author makes this interesting because he¿s not the only one talking, or narrating he uses dialogue of the characters to do the talking. This book would only be recommend for those above 10 and who like fantasy books. You will not drop this book until you¿re done.

    CAN'T WAIT CAN'T WAIT!!!!

I only just read the first book of Percy Jackson and so far I keep on pulling it out from my bookcase and begin reading it over and over! I has the best blends of mythology today and humor that any book I have ever had the pleasure of picking out. Me, I am a book worm but this book I can't get away from. And the next one sounds so juicy and good that I am actually counting down the days untill its releashed. I bet I ll be in every bookstore in the county trying to find it. The tittle and the little peices I've been able to get are so great its really frustrating to see that it will not come out till April!!!
