Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The subtitle says it all—this is essentially a workbook for marine ecology education. As such, its short units about topics such as "Marine Mammals," or "The Kelp Forest," or "Food Webs in the Sea" are each organized around basic essays, small hands-on projects and little games. And, appropriately, there is copyright clearance for teachers to photocopy the handbook's material at will (black-and-white reproductions are reasonably crisp for reproduction). Back matter consists of a very extensive glossary, as well as a section on resources. There is a stab at creativity in the occasional quotes gleaned from wise yet forgotten early conservationists that end most units. This is a workmanlike effort, sure to be of use to lower school science/ecology teachers. 1996, Roberts Rinehart, $16.95. Ages 6 to 10. Reviewer:Kathleen Karr
