Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Children of all ages like sea turtles, thanks in part to television nature programs that frequently feature groups of nestlings marching to sea to lively music. But did you know that, until a relatively short time ago, scientists knew nothing about sea turtles' lives between hitting the surf for the first time and when mature females appear on dry land to lay eggs many years later? With further research and developing technology, scientists know much more about sea turtles during their lives at sea. Now, thanks to rebus, a time-honored technique that combines simple pictures—"picture words"—mixed with easy to understand printed words to teach non- or early readers, young children can learn too. This book, part of the Benchmark Rebus "Ocean Life" series, combines a grand total of twenty-six printed words with pictures of sea turtle(s), eggs, fish, a sandy hole on the beach, the ocean, sand, sea grass and water to tell very early readers about what sea turtles do. Colorful photo illustrations (All turtles pictured are green sea turtles, although they aren't named.), plus the volume's small size help the process along. A three-word "Words to Know," a list of books, DVD titles and websites round out the adventure. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
