Meet the Author

Born in Jackson County, Michigan, in 1900, Holling Clancy Holling graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923. He then worked in a taxidermy department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and spent time working in anthropology under Dr. Ralph Linton. During this period, he married Lucille Webster and within a year of their marriage accepted a position as art instructor on the first University World Cruise, sponsored by New York University. For many years, Holling C. Holling dedicated much of his time and interest to making books for children. Much of the material he used was known to him first hand, and his wife, Lucille, worked with him on many of the illustrations.

    Exceptional Detail

This book combines geography with technical details, history, and storytelling. The level of detail may be slightly over the heads of very young readers, but then, too, it isn't necessary to read every sidebar to enjoy the story and pictures and still come away with a lot of new information.

Seabird Will Give Your Child's Imagination Wings

Forty five years ago in Sydney, Australia, I chose this magical book at a school library 'buy a book day'. It remained an absolute favourite throughout my childhood and youth and now my own children love it also. The charming story of the ivory gull and its journey across the oceans of the world, the advent of modern technology and several generations of the one family of seafaring adventurers, is captivating in itself. Combine this story with Holling's vibrant illustrations and fascinating sketches and the young reader is transported by this book, back to a bygone era of sail and steam like no no other I've known. I'm delighted to find it back in print and am about to order several copies for my own kids and a few others we think deserving of such a gem - as well as another for the library of the same school as my children now attend there!
