Overview

Karan Casey, lead singer of the Irish group Solas, leads a cast of Celtic performers in this moving musical makeover of a classic Irish legend. Seal Maiden is the tale of Solanna the Younger's transformation from seal into human maiden. (If this story sounds familiar, you may remember it from the film The Secret of Roan Inish.) Marina Carr's stunning script employs tragedy with a very light touch, and Casey's lilting voice provides a suitably soft-touched narration. Thirteen songs with a traditional Celtic sound -- shaped by fiddles, guitars, uilleann pipes, and bodhran -- punctuate each section of the story. Spotlighting her primary talent, Casey graces the songs with her mellifluous voice, appearing alongside such notable Irish musicians as Altan's Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh, Afro-Celt Sound System's Iarla Ó Lionaird, and acclaimed instrumentalists Niall Vallely, Martin Hayes, and Dennis Cahill. Seal Maiden is the perfect way to introduce kids to the magic of Irish culture and tradition. The timeless music and poignant, romantic story will enchant adults and lull children of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Former Solas lead singer Karan Casey, Altan's Mairead Mi Mhaonaigh, and Afro Celt Sound System's Iarla O Lionaird are joined by members of Nomos and other Celtic music luminaries on The Seal Maiden: A Celtic Musical. Inspired by the Selkie (a sea spirit that can take the form of a seal or a beautiful young man or woman), the musical features authentic Celtic instrumentation, including penny whistles, fiddles, pipes, bodhrans, and concertinas on songs like "The Waves Down in the Ocean," "The Song of the Seal," "Seoithin," and "We're Going Sailing." Though many Selkie stories end sadly, The Seal Maiden adds some whimsical humor to the tale, making it a charming as well as poignant celebration of Celtic traditions.

Both I and my 4 year old love this one. The music is beautiful and the story engaging. Very different than anything I've ever heard before.

I bought this CD just by chance and love it. A lovely story mixed with music that my little one loved to hear. Wish she had more just like this one!
