Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Use this book to show a program in which children are actively involved and to encourage volunteerism.” —School Library Journal on Leopard & Silkie

“Lindsey's excellent photographs show why humans can't stay away: Leopard's large, dark eyes and expressive mug seem to be smiling right at the viewer, and his furry, floppy body just calls out for a hug.” —Horn Book Magazine on Leopard & Silkie

“Although photos of the adorable seal pups steal this nicely designed picture book, kids will likely find Miles--someone who is much like them--to be inspiring, and his efforts may spark an interest in animal rights.” —Booklist on Leopard & Silkie

Children's Literature - Lisa Czirr
Humans can have negative and positive impacts on nature; Leopard the seal pup’s story has a little bit of both. When Leopard is born, he bonds with his mother and soon takes to the sea thanks to his natural swimming instinct. All seems well until a crowd of human onlookers shows up and overwhelms the newborn seal. The young Seal Sitter Miles comes to the rescue, taking steps to keep the crowd back and to build a comfortable raft to help the seals relax. This narrative, nonfiction book is an early reader adaptation of the picture book, Leopard and Silkie. Photographs throughout depict Leopard and his mother, reinforcing the realism of this story. Miles is a young boy himself, which would make him a relatable role model for the intended audience. An author’s note discusses the problems that humans can cause to seals’ habitats, encouraging children to be proactive about protecting marine environments. The link that is provided is packed with information about the story’s real world background. This book is a great way to show a young reader how they can make a difference, just like the Seal Sitters. Reviewer: Lisa Czirr; Ages 5 to 7.
